Cannot get blown 454 to start.
Guys,
Working on the Cigarette today and cannot get the port engine to start. A month ago or so we found the TB IV distributor sensor was bad and I replaced it with a spare. Today while trying, we noticed the batteries weren’t really holding a charge so we replaced. Now the engine spins over nice and fast. Giving it two to three strong pumps and letting it sit for about 10 seconds we try to fire. A couple of times it has spit through the carbs. It ran once and then spit again. A couple more times it did the same spitting and now will do nothing. I did notice the coil was whining for a few seconds after trying. Removing the coil wire will give one big spark out of the tower but nothing else. This is a TB-IV with V6 module and old MSD 6M (before they were junk). Might try swapping the MSD boxes. Out of ideas. I want him to replace the whole thing with Delco but his wife will kill him. Thoughts? |
Will it run without the MSD
|
Haven’t tested that yet. The harness isn’t wired to run it without.
Might have been really retarded… checking that now. |
I had a similar issue and it was timing for me… I hooked up a timing light and checked cranking timing just with the starter turning the engine over. While my set up was EFI doing this helped me narrow down the issue and get it fired.

Very retarded.
We made some assumptions on the port engine since it had come off the dunk and went right into the boat. It was probably stripped down to make it easier and the distributor was just stabbed back in it. Eyeballed timing mark at 16 degrees base and lined up the cap. Boom. Sorry for the false alarm. Was a long day. |
