what brand bronze distributor gear?
 

need to change out dist gears for bronze and wanted to see what brand is the go to. what ones have worked well and which have been poor quality. MSD, Howards, Comp Cams? I have had issues with a lot of Comp products in the last couple years. never had problems with Howards. MSD dist are rust prone but maybe the gears are good? lets hear what you have used and like or hate.

I haven't used a bronze gear for many years. I have pretty much used the melonized gears for everything. Are you working with a cam that must use a bronze gear? That gear is pretty much a sacrificial piece and I wouldn't think would have any place in a boat engine.

cams are by Bullet and they want a bronze gear for this core so I can live with changing them out from time to time. I know there have been complaints about certain brands on certain parts so trying to avoid any that real world experience has shown a problem

I wonder if Bullet can supply you with their gear of choice that will fit whatever dist you are using.

as you suggested I called them and their recommendation was Comp Cams, Crower or Isky as the best options. he stated that as all these companies have been bought out some have started importing different parts and the quality is questionable even with some known brands. damn china junk is going to be the death of us all.

Call Chris Straub. Not sure where his are made but everything else he has seems to be real nice quality. I have used several of his Melonized gears.

I've had the best luck with Howards bronze gears. They'll last me atleast 3 seasons and still look nearly new. Mallory, Crane, Comp and every other brand I tried barely lasted a season without wearing the teeth to sharp points. Also try the Crane cams trick. Take a hacksaw blade or grind a fine slot down your top oil ring on the dist. shaft inline with your cam shaft. That will allow oil to run down and lube the gears while on extended low rpm times.

that is good to hear as I have had good luck with the other stuff I have used from Howards. I had already thought about the oil slot modification as I am sure a little extra oil there cant hurt

Been using composite for about 8 years,last ones from comp cams,about 120 a piece.

I thought about that but Bullet said bronze only so figured that was the safest route
