Helm change for Twin Verado
Have 2023 Chaparral 280 OSX twin 250 V8 Verado's with twin cylinder electric hydraulic steering helm.
Current steering turns is 8 turns lock to lock which is ridiculous. Think about cruising along and there is something you need to steer past and have to make almost a full turn just to clear it. Docking is a joke if steering is attempted. NO Joystick control Merc install manual list should use a 50CC helm for twin install which should have 6.5 turns L to L. While that's not great, think it would be safer then what I have now Plan is figure out what helm I can change out to get less turns, or even what would it take to change out to something else that works better |
I am getting ready to do a repower to Verados on my old Baja 280 sportfish. While doing a little research, I found that Seastar has a helm that they claim is 4 turns lock to lock. Might want to check that out.

Thanks, Have seen them was hopping someone has done this a few times to be able to advise what is needed.
The Merc install manual list 40cc helm for a single install which will give a 4 turn LtoL. Don't fully understand what is different with twin. There is 2 rams (one on each motor) on the twin, so why does Merc say 50cc instead of maybe 80cc to get a 4 turn. Or maybe a 60cc, might have something to do with the amount of effort to turn the helm, don't know I have a question out on the Formula forum asking what size they use on the 310. |
The pair of Verados that I bought just has one steering ram on the stbd engine and a tiebar that turns the port engine. This was the factory setup on a 34 yellowfin. I wonder if you unhooked one of the steering rams if it would double the turning speed????

That's a idea to look into, thanks
