Blower Paint options

Looking to paint my B&M 420s and BBC polished intakes.

I've heard that paints get a bad rap for insulating and not shedding the blower case heat.

What success have you had with great looking thermal shedding paint on blowers?

Salt water use.

Thanks,

Art

I`ve never heard that ... how many Whipples aren`t painted? I can`t think of a one.
My blowers are cold and sweating after a run, not seeing any "insulation" Latent heat of evaporation is a powerful thing.
IMOP this is a non issue.

I like white :D

Before and after .. my only complaint is it`s hard to keep clean.

Painted my 8-71 with VHT high temp wrinkle finish and it held up great even with the sweating that dan mentioned....I now have a magnesium 14-71 that it did not stick to however that's because I didn't research and do the proper prep for painting magnesium...I have all the stuff to properly strip, prep, and paint it now so it won't be an issue after that.

If the paint is "holding heat" and actually causing an issue then there is something wrong with the blower IMO.

There is an episode on "Engine Masters" that addresses 'powder-coated' intakes, and it raised the charge temperature like 20*+ over bare aluminum, but not sure is matters in marine applications, particularly with intercoolers and such. Make um' pretty and let them rock!

Thanks for the great photos Dan, I was hoping you would chime in. Your engines are a thing of beauty, and I remembered your Whipples were painted.

I saw some data that suggested painted Blowers were being insulated. That flies in the face of the thermal dispersing coatings for brake rotors etc. So I was a bit skeptical.

Running your E85 must help a lot as well.

Great point.

How did you find the wrinkle finish for cleaning etc?

Even prep and paint for aluminum can be tricky. Hopefully your Mag painting goes well long term.

Yeah, there is a lot of surface area on blower housings to shed heat as well. I likely won't be running more than 6psi...and even that would not be for long.

Tuning wise, I'm looking for a cruise with intake manifold pressure at zero.

It wasn't bad at all...either just a wet rag wipe down or a little quick detailer on a rag and it looked new again...

This is the mag 14-71 before it started peeling on the sides

Aluminum 8-71....this was before I fired it but it looked the same after 10-15 hard hours on it.
