What Outdrive do I have?

It is currently on a 79 pantera 24' -- not sure if it is original or not.

It has Mercruiser 330 on the out drive.

its paired up with a 454 330hp motor.

Basically i need to know what i have -- and what it will take as far as hp. I am looking to build up to a 550 hp motor (possibly a whippled 625).

What will this drive take stock? what drive should i be looking at? what drive will work with this transom assembly?

Is there anywhere that lists drives and what max hp they can handle?

I see several alpha 1's with transoms fairly cheap and some bravo 1's in my range also.

thanks

Mark

Could be a TRS,do you have a transmission inside the boat? If it's a TRS then the cutout will be too big for a alpha/bravo. If it's a TRS then you could put a speedmaster three drive on it.

Probably a TRS if it's original. See if you can find a serial number on the drive to confirm. I've seen a lot of TRSs live a long time at around 500hp.
Forget about an alpha, thay're only good for 270-300hp max.
The TRS is also stronger than the bravo, but TRS parts may soon become hard to find.
See what kind of tranny it has. If it's a B/W velvet drive, 550hp shouldn't be a problem.

Being a 79, it probably has a TRS with a MercTrans tranny. that will be your weak link. (the tranny)

Good luck, Kurt.

CHAOS REIGNS 12-03-2002 12:48 PM

yup -- possibly jeff's!

OK -- i'll see what more information i can find -- i have the boat out at a friends house -- so its kind of a hassel to go look at it right now. Should be in the new house in a week or two -- makes things much easier!
