Hydraulic Steering Durability: Zeiger Mayfair or IMCO

Hi All,
I'm installing hydraulic steering on my 2003 Donzi 22c bravo x and am looking for manufacturer recommendations. I know they all are good, but want to get an idea on durability. IMCO, Zeiger, and Latham seem to be great products, but I am not sure of the durability of the rear plate systems vs. wing plate systems. Anyone seen a failure where rear plate bolts to the drive? I am also considering Mayfair. This is considerably cheaper than other manufacturers and their wingplate design probably applies less stress to the drive. However, It's been harder to find reviews on Mayfair rig and I don't want to be a victim of getting what I pay for. Anyone have experience with the Mayfair system and their rams? Are they durable or are cylinder rebuilds a common problem? I've got a bead on an older zeiger rig, but I am not committed. I know hydraulic steering recommendations is beating a dead horse, but I'd appreciate anyone's 2 cents.

Thanks,
James

I’ve had 2 IMCO systems. One on a 35 Cig and my current one on a 42 CIG. Almost 2 decades of flawless service on both. No issues with mounts.

It’s a bit scary to me when I search the Zeiger systems and the only thing that really comes up is rebuild threads here on OSO. Again, I have no knowledge of the product so take my commentary with a HUGE helping of salt given the only thing I have to offer is that my IMCO has been good.

Good Luck - I always hate these decisions because you’re trying to manage quality and price!!

I installed a Zeiger system on my Velocity. Had it for 9 years, than sold boat. Not 1 issue with it. High quality setup. When i researched them before my purchase, I didn't come across all the rebuild threads. Maybe I'm not a good searcher? 😃

2005 Velocity VR 1 single engine with Ziegler dual ram steering. Zero problems. The Velociy, before this one, I added on Imco steering, also no problems.

I've only done 1 install myself and that was an IMCO. Very easy install, good directions, quality product and zero issues for close to 18 years. I did remove all the fluid from the reservoir and pump 2 years ago when I had the engines and drives off. I also hand bled the cylinders and replaced the fluid just because it was sitting in the garage over that Winter and I was bored.

Thanks all for the advice. Anyone have experience with Mayfair?

I installed a Mayfair single ram system on my Nordic 5 years ago. Install went easy, good instructions. No issues at all so far. The pieces look to be good quality. And it's easy to switch outdrives because of their bracket design.

I have a IMCO single Bravo system listed in Swap Shop. Only selling because of a big upgrade in power so going to a dual system. As close to new as you'll find. Good luck on your project.
