500 efi won’t start

Boat ran great last fall, stored for 5 months and now won’t start. No spark, No fuel from the mechanical pump, electric pump seems to be fine. New mechanical pump was installed, still won’t pull fuel. Checked all lines, filters, all is fine (yes there is fuel in the tank) Whata the odds these two issues are related? Does this system require fuel pressure from the mechanical to the cool fuel to fire the ignition? Swapped the coils (port to star), swapped the ECU, inspected the cam in the fuel pump housing and changed the gear lube, smell was horrible, but lift on cam was normal (I think) not 100% what the original lift measures. Thoughts?

Glogged injectors from bad fuel ?

He also said no spark so I wouldn't expect this to be the case. Especially all 8 clogging over 1 winter.

Do you see any gas coming from the mechanical pump with the motor turning over and the outfeed line removed?

I have a moomba with an idmar 325 that has been fighting me for the last 3 years every spring. First year someone else winterized it and in the spring it wouldnt start. The fuel in the lines turned a greenish color and the lines were plugged. Simply by depressing the Schrader valve on the fuel rail while the pumps were running was enough to unclog. Fast forward the to fall, I winterize it, then next spring the exact same thing happens. (With stabil in ALL the fuel!) I had to replace the filter, clean all lines, and clean the lphv pump out. Worked great all summer. The next fall I winterize and drain ALL fuel from the lines. Fast forward to this spring and I burnt up the low pressure pump trying to prime the lines. New pump and we were good to go, but it did take me priming the lines with fresh fuel.

No fuel from the out feed line while cranking over! Brand new fuel pump installed, and yes new gear lube, and cam lobe seems fine, plenty of lift, freshly cleaned, inspected and primed lines from the tank.

So you have NO fuel coming from mechanical pump cranking, thats strictly a fuel supply issue, ie, antisyphon valve in tank stuck, line has crack and is sucking air, obstruction, etc, has nothing to do with your no spark. Take suction hose to mechanical pump, stick it in a fuel supply container, see if it will pump cranking then.

No antisyphon in this system, fuel line is fine, pick up is fine, yes there is fuel in the tank, and it’s hard to believe not one gremlin hit this off season but two? Fuel and spark! Inlet in remote tank will be performed today (results tbd)

Lanyards checked and double checked!

did you check the 3 fuses and pull the other relay(not fuel pump),look for overheated terminals.

fuses are fine, and had not pulled or “swapped”relays (twin engine set up)

So one runs and the other doesn't ? cranks but no spark ?

BYFS 06-26-2024 10:38 AM

Yes, port runs, no issues, star is not pulling fuel, nor sparking.

Right now forget about no spark, find out why no fuel

Use a gas can and length of fuel line. Disconnect fuel from tank at filter, Connect gas can line to filter

Prefill filter

Edit, remove filter and dump contents into clear container

You confirm your in neutral…you check neutral switch on shifter

Fuel delivery issue solved, ZERO spark! Inspected distributor, looks fine, rotor spinning, swapped the ignition module, which was not the problem!

Griff 06-28-2024 01:21 PM

My next guess would normally be the distributor pick up coil, but hard to believe it would suddenly go bad while layed up.
So' I'm more leaning toward a wiring issue where some corrosion developed

Here is a TB V troubleshooting flowchart

What was the fuel issue?

Primed it 3 times, finally took.

liberator221 06-29-2024 03:18 PM

I had a terminal end corrode away inside the connector of wires coming from pick/up to ignition module. Difficult to see but no spark.
