454MG Alternator
Guys,
Got a buddy with a 454MAG. We were out a couple weekends ago. When he hit the drive trim switch, the engine died. It would start right back up, but it would die again when he hit the trim switch. First battery was showing low on charge. Switched to the other battery, and the problem went away. Went the rest of the day and the next without issue. If there is anything else that might be contributing, LMK. Since then, he’s checked the voltage coming off the alternator and it shows just a bit low (~13v). The batteries seem fine after a full charge. He’s inclined to pick up a new alternator, but can’t seem to figure out which one to get. Suggestions? Are there any safe Amazon options? Is there a possibility it’s just a regulator? Can the reg be replaced separately? Thanks. Brad. |
I’ve had decent luck with wilson and db electric.
Has the scenario been retried with that 1st battery ? It may be toast but checking okay. |
It's been a few years since I have used them, but DB Electric has had good products for starters and alternators. I like the simplicity of the 1 wire alternators. You might call them, they can produce a custom alt if you need one. I am sure you know this but just pointing it out, when checking the voltage of the Alt you need to know what it is off and running, I would expect to see 13.x when testing Alt if batt is/was low. You can get a clamp on DC reading DVM for a reasonable cost on Amazon. Invaluable tool for checking charging and draw issues.
