1996 7.4 Piston Rings????
I am rebuilding a 1996 7.4 non-mag 454. I am still standard bore and have tried Sealed Power SLP-9905 rings. The oil rings will not work. They will not compress far enough to make it into the bore. Ther must be a special ring required for this piston. GM wants $46.00 per hole for factory rings and they can't tell me if they're the right ones. Has anyone else experienced this and have the Sealed Power part number. I am using stock pistons.

I have seen a ring grinder,to set the end gap.How much do they overlap if you put just the ring in the bore?
|
I guess the first thing to do is find out if your stock pistons require Mercruisers METRIC rings???? Some stock 454's do have metric rings. Nothing else will work.... if not, use a ring grinder as mentioned.

has nothing to do with grinding the rings. They fit the bores fine, the piston needs a certain type of ring. I just need a part number other than OEM.

Try Federal Mogul E233K piston rings.

Are the E233K a plasma moly or std. moly? I think that number is a Std. replacement ring 5/64, 5/64 & 3/16 oil ring but I'll check, thanks>

I have a partial set that I used when I rebuilt a 454 Magnum years ago. I screwed up one of the oil rings so had to buy a second set. Here's the specs from the box. I'm trying to sell these if you're interested.
(1) Set of Speed-pro piston rings - missing one set of oil rings 4.25 x .078 (8) Top rings 4.25 x .078 (8) Middle rings 4.25 x .1875 (7) Oil rings |
I just need the oil rings but thanks anyway.

E233K is a standard moly, SAE, as you mentioned.

I think my machine shop may have found the number. E533K or E553K, however, these are not plasma moly so I will be buying the entire set for only the oil rings. Anyone need the compresssion rings?
