Oil - Water Condensation
I read in another post that suggested running or hooking up a PCV valve to help with condensation in valve covers. I run a 1071 with 2 850 carbs and no thermostat. Not a real issue in the summer heat but I ran it last week a Havasu and with the cool weather and water temp I found more condensation in the valve covers than I would like to see. Oil is fine. Just wondered if anyone runs a PCV valve on a blower set up.

No opinions? Thought maybe I pissed someone off. :D
Do you think a PCV valve would make any difference in a motor that has good breathers? N/A or Blown. As for condensation buildup. |
I think Bobby Daniels can answer your question for you, but he's been sick with the flu the last few days.

Like in a green house moisture will rise to the top and then settle as it cools. Therefore, the moisture gets hot enough to rise to the valve covers, collect then settle into the pan. Just not all of it. Also if you have moisture and "sludge" enough to see it then I would check to see if the oil was getting hot enough to "boil out" the condensation. And change my oil.
Ive got over 700 hrs on some stock 454's and dont get any moisture/sludge build up even on the filler cap. So yes I would be concerned. My .02, run breathers or PVC setup in almost everything. It gives the moisture somewhere to go when you are at operating temps. I was told years ago, most engines run cleaner when there is a slight vacum in the crankcase. |
Thanks for the replies. Opie I have to agree with you I just don't remember seeing to many blown boats running PCV valves. Most I see are trying to squeeze every last HP or MPH out of them around here it seems. I think I will try it and see if that helps enough. I just wondered if there was somethin I was over looking on why I shouldn't is all.

I had the same problem in my Prochared motor. Running without a stat will do that. I now run a 120° stat and don't see any sludge. At 120° the engine is cool enough for HP, but just warm enough for no condinsation. ASM sell the 120° stats.
