Velocity 390 Purchase Opinion
Hello everyone. I'm about to pull the trigger on a 2000 Velocity 390 with HP500 and Bravo 1 drives.
I had a boat survey done everything with Hull checks out with 1 note that I may be over thinking. Transom moisture reading "med to high" at different spots in the transom but inspection guy said " the boat is 25 years old and its normal. It is indicating there is med to high moisture in the wood coring of the transom. All hammer percussion soundings were good." The boat mechanically ran fine. Think needs bigger props...has 26p Bravo Props. Seller asking 59k, inspection guy valued it at 54k. Should I close on this deal? I'm flying up to Florida to see boat in person on Tuesday. |
Hard for anyone on here to give accurate information without more information and pictures, high moisture reading would concern me......Engine and hull hours ? with trailer
|
I'm not allowed to post photos because I have less than 10 posts.
|
Hour meter has 193hr. Assuming boat and engines for 193 total time. Price is with trailer.
|
just spam here with single posts, 4,5,6,7.8.9.10...............thats super low hours for a 25 yr old boat, it should in VGC if taken care of

54-59k seems like a good deal for a 25 yo boat in the 38-40 ish feet if its all good IMO
if winter stored inside and heated you might have good luck for years! worst case it will need a 5-6k transom... which already kinda seem to be discounted in some way compared to survey ! good luck ! |
Transoms are double that depending on the hull
|
Double !!! Really?
wow i did not expect that ! |
I would reach out to Kenny at let's talk boats(his business). He worked at Velocity for many years and it's always helpful. There's a good chance he knows the boat.
Good Luck |
Thank you. I will try calling him tomorrow.
Looking forward to any other opinions on price point or experience with "moisture" but not showing any signs of rot. Passed the acoustic hammer test. |
Talk with Kenny, he likely knows the boat. One issue with the Carb HP500' the hour meter means nothing. Those can be disconnect. I almost never see them read the same as a EFI motor.
Where is the boat? You could get someone to do a comparison and leak down to give you a better idea, Kenny may even do that depending on where it is at. |
Ditto on talking with Kenny as he can very likely provide a good estimate for the transom replacement. If it's a Florida boat Kenny may even be able to do the work if needed. Kenny worked at Velocity around 2000 and knows the history of many Velocities as he worked on their initial sale and or brokered many resales. I think the sale price is reasonable even factoring in a transom replacement provided the rest of the boat is good. The 390 is an excellent boat and value for that money.

Good morning everyone
Thanks for all the advise. I spoke with Kenny and got his input. Looking forward to seeing the boat for myself in person tomorrow. Will update everyone on the purchase. |

wow i did not expect that ! Then replace it all, maybe making some upgrades along the way on the rigging etc. |
Engine bay looks pretty good and tidy.....good luck with the purchase
|
Love those boats. And it looks clean. Price is fair. But a transom could put you upside down it. Only hurts once though, then enjoy it for 5-10 years.

If im correct i looked at that boat last year. Pompano beach. it was in decent shape. i had the same readings around the transom assembly and exhaust. there was a hanging piece of rotted wood in the cabin above the bed. Id guess it could of been from the anchor locker. starboard rear corner of the rub rail looked like someone backed into a wall or something and tried to fix it with caulk. these are all small issues to me Except the wet transom, thats why I didnt pull the trigger. Im in no way trying to talk you out of it, just want to give you a heads up and things i saw for you to look at.
