Stupid engine alignment question.
 

Long story, short. Mechanic installed and aligned engine with 1 jam nut under the weight of the engine on the billet motor mounts I bought. https://www.cpperformance.com/p-1353...ine-mount.aspx

(jam nut is only 1/2 the height of a normal nut, so 1/2 the threads are engaged) And installed the nylock nut on the top of the engine mount.

When I questioned him on it, he said he would add the second jam nut.

There are not accessories mounted to the engine yet, or any wiring or plumbing. His job was to install the engine and out drive and align them.

So we removed the nylock top nut and loosened the mounting base nuts. Used a tow motor and a ratcheting turnbuckle to lift up the engine. He then removed the mounts from the block. Not the motor mounts in question, but the mounts on the block that sit on top of the motor mounts anchored to the stringer.(sorry, not sure what else to call them)

He then used a digital micrometer to measure the height of the nut the engine was sitting on. He installed the second jam nut and returned the nut back to the micrometer height.and torqued the 2 jam nuts together. Put the mount back onto the engine and set it back down onto the stringer mounted engine mount. Then re tightened the top nut and mounting base nuts.

Did this same procedure on the other side.

My question is..... Should I have the alignment rechecked after moving the engine around like this? Or will it be OK?

Before you ask, I was there to pick up my boat and haul it back home 500 mi. So taking it back to him is not an option and he thinks it will be fine since he put the nuts back to the original height/position.

What are your thoughts?

Wouldn't hurt to pull the drive and check it. New
Bravo alignment tool is less than $50 online. Good luck!!!

That's kinda the way I'm leaning. Put a call into the local performance boat shop to see what they would charge just to check it. Prob a lot cheaper than buying another new coupler.

Alignment tool isn't expensive and good to have. Any time I pull my drive I check the alignment.

Yes, check alignment and buy the tool you will need it again

If you get a shop to slide the tool in and there is an issue, your going to pay more to get it finished

BTW, don't do any motor mount changes without pulling the drive first

This is exactly what I was afraid of.That did not happen when we added the second jam nut. I was concerned with the drive being still connected. It wasn't lifted up very much, but each side was raised independently.

Hopefully you got lucky, but theres a decent chance you may have bent your drive input shaft or coupler doing this....

Had another guy look at it today. He said the alignment tool went in just fine. It's acceptable. Just double check the engine mount nuts after some running. That was the reassurance I was looking for.

Finally time to start piecing it back together.

Hoping I did dodge that bullet. Was kind of thinking the same thing when we were lifting the engine. Thanks
