Do I need to send my heads to the shop?
8.1L Volvo Penta in Carolina Classic 25
I was getting rusty metal flakes out of the exhaust which made me take the manifolds/risers off. They are being replaced with a set from Stainless Steel Marine in Miami which will fix the reversion causing the damage seen in the below pictures. Compressions are still good on all cylinders. I didn't have any exhaust leaks at the head before. So the question is, will the mating surface on the heads below be good enough to put on the new manifolds with new gaskets and bolts and be good to go? 8.1L Volvo Penta in Carolina Classic 25 https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...c922fa997.jpeg Port Stbd |
I absolutely detest high temp red silicone, but this looks like a good candidate for using some.

I don't like that pic one bit. RTV or not, I don't think I'd trust the seal.

I rebuilt one a while back that looked like that. to clean them up they would have had to take at least 3/16" off, maybe more. wound up getting 10 cents a pound for them and found nicer heads.

I found a set off a truck with the same casting numbers and had them redone. cheaper and they were clean castings vs the rusted ones I had. the engine I was rebuilding had been sunk at one time so I didnt have much to work with.
