Broken Shift Cam
Guys,
Finally got the PQ out for a “boating” day, rather than a utilitarian day of tuning, and it got cut very short. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...0f80b6488.jpeg Broken Shift Cam https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.off...6826efc84.jpeg Shop said the shift lever was “wonky”. The shop has both parts on order, as well as a new cable that goes from the shifter plate to the drive, and they’ll hopefully have them all installed by week’s end. I know the shifter linkage was initially a bit out, due to my replacing the bellows while the drive was off over the winter, but I thought I had brought it all back into shape. I know it went into reverse kinda hard when pulling it off the trailer, but I also know I put it into forward and back into neutral a couple times before heading to the dock. It wasn’t until I went to put it into reverse to slide it parallel for docking that I realized it wouldn’t come out of forward. Unfortunately, I bounced it off the dock in the process of figuring this out. Luckily, there’s no real damage; just some ugly black smears from the hard rubber lining the dock’s edge that should just rub right off. We put it back on the trailer as went out for a day of boating on our old Rinker that we sold to some friends. As I understand, this is not a high failure rate part. What could have caused this to break? I can’t imagine that little shifter cable would have the rigidity to cause this….? Thanks. Brad. |
Usually happens if you remove the 555 ECU from a 496L LOL!!!
Seriously I had it happened to one of my bravo drives long ago ,replaced it ,never found a problem. Never had the issue again either. |

I never would have thought.... :angry-smiley-038: Had you done anything previously that could have contributed? Like replaced a lower shifter cable or whatever? To be fair... It's very likely 23yrs old, and been put to its task a half gazillion times. Thanks. Brad. |

I get all this. But I'll need a causal path to report to the CFO, or she will blame it on some change I made. Thanks. Brad. |
Its because of more HP,,,,,,, want me to tell the CFO for you?

Guys,
Just a shoutout to Hilltop Marine in Bronston, KY, between Burnside and Conley Bottom.... I dropped the boat off Monday morning and told them I'd really like to pick it up Friday afternoon or Saturday morning so the CFO and I could spend our anniversary on Cumberland. They initially told me I would be lucky if they got to have a look at it by Friday, let alone have it back together. At the time we (I, at least) thought it was just a linkage adjustment issue, me blaming myself for not knowing how to properly adjust the shift linkage. I get a text from Todd Monday afternoon, with the pics above, informing me that they'd already ordered the parts, and that they should be in on Thursday (today). I asked on Tuesday if they thought they'd have it ready for pickup by Saturday morning and was told "Trending that way". I get a text this morning, telling me it's all back together, tested good on the trailer, and they are going to the ramp to test it under load. Farqin' EH! Thanks. Brad. |
