1992 HP465 Springs valves recommendation

Hello guys,

I have a 502 465HP Carb 1992 flat tappet with 170h and gill thru hull. I purchased it last year and had a very funny summer, no mechanical issues.

This winter I want to take care of the engine, as I don’t know about history maintenance.

I think is wise to begin changing the valvesprings.

I read in a tread about HP500’s the following parts:

- Valve Springs Comp 929-16
- Retainers Comp 741-16
- Keepers/Locks Comp 612-16
- Seals Comp 505-16

Is this set appropriate for a 465HP?
Comp Springs 929 are DISCONTINUED. What would be the replacement?

Other option it would be to follow up with Crane. I read 465 it’s a little bit less aggressive with the springs that the HP500. Third option could be Isky.

It would be a BIG HELP, if you can recommend me the right parts # you would use to update the valve train please. (Valve springs + retainers + locks + seals)

Thank you,
Doc.

If it only has 170 hours on it and it runs good personally I would leave it alone.

The 929 springs are too much pressure for the flat tappet cam. They are normally used on hydraulic roller cams.

Thank you very much Bill. The engine is 170h. But 33 years old. It’s what make me worry.

there is an other spring # that would be better option than 929?

If not, I will inspect all springs and set a preload again to minimise any play or noise. If any spring it’s damaged I will substitute with an OEM.
