Holley 800 vs 850

Looking for Dennis Moores input on this question. In your bible you state that the 800 should only be used on the dart intake.
Why is that, O powerfull master

I have a 540 with a performer RPM using the 800 with jet changes. Would I be better off using the 850?

540/565 hp
Eddie Marine thunder exaust with long extensions
performer RPM
Crane roller set up 585 intake/610 exaust
800 holley
34 advance

Looking for anybodys suggestions ??

I would think the 800 is too small for 540. The 800 is better than an 850 on a 454.

The hp series 830 would probably be a good choice. If I remember right, Kamma had them on his 540's fro a while.

Yep Griff, you got it right. I used the Holley HP Series 830cfm carb with mech secondaries, 4-corner idling and Annular Discharge. I had these on a pair of 540's that made 630hp @5400rpm. The guy dynoing my engines said in the 20 years he has been dynoing engines he never saw a carb follow/respond as well as these did on my engines and he's not the one who built my engines so he had no reason to lie. Since then I have gone to a HP Series 950cfm because I had the heads fully ported since then and we dyno'd them and there wasn't much difference between the 830's and the 950's until about 5000rpm. The 950's made 16 more hp over the 830's.
