36 Outlaw/HP500's, top speed
 

I've got a customer who's 36 Outlaw doesn't seem to be running like it should. What would be a reasonable top end expectation for this boat with Carbed HP500's? I haven't had a chance to GPS it, but he's getting only 4500 RPM running 26 pitch Bravo 1 props, with 1.5:1 gears. That works out to be in the mid 60's for speed. Just looking for a target speed. It seems like that boat should be able to pull 26" props. Anybody got some accurate information for this boat?

I've got a 99 '33 Outlaw with carb HP500s (know its not a 36, but shouldn't be that far off). With 24B1s, I able to pull 5000-5200 with a GPS of between 72 - 74. I ran some 26s (not labbed) last summer and RPMs went down to the 4600 - 4800 range. This spring I'll try reworked 26B1s and probably some 27 Mirages.

Are the valve springs OK?

That's why I'm trying to establish what it should be running before I start trouble shooting. He may just be over propped, which I can fix. If 26's brought you down that far then he probably needs some 24's also. I would expect he should run within 3-4 MPH of your boat so he may not be that far off. Thanks,

I have a 2002, 36 Outlaw with 500 EFI's. It is loaded up with options and usually has a pretty full load of fuel.

It is completely stock with Bravo XZ's, 1.5:1 and 26 pitch bravo 4-blades.

The very best I have seen is just under 73 MPH on the GPS at 4800 RPM.

Currently it is in the shop getting the mufflers removed, I have added K&N billet filters and have had the props labbed. Hope to see around 5100 RPM and a couple more MPH next season.

For my 99 36 Outlaw with 500EFI's,1.36 gears,and extension boxes,The best I've seen on GPS is 74.3 with labbed 26 Bravo 1s,@ about 4800 rpm.Before the props were labbed I was only able to turn them to about 4600 RPM.I also ran some 23 Mirage +s for awhile and could turn them at 5250 with a best speed of 73.6,but the boat was a ***** to get on plane in rough water without blowing them out.

Interesting ... before I opened the thread I guessed that you would get upper 70s from that setup. A Velocity 39 with carb 500HPs will do 83MPH GPS ... been there, done that. Just didn't expect there to be that much difference.

I cannot add to much to this discussion other than to relay my experience so far with a similar size boat. I have an AT 37 AVH. We originally put a set of 30 pitch Bravos on the boat. It ran 75 mph. By simply labbing the props, the boat went from 75 at 5000 rpm to 82 and the motors were hitting the rev limiters. We are going to try a set of labbed 32's and see what the result is. The boat is loaded, A/C, genset, water heater, mirowave, fridge, etc....you get the picture.

I guess the point is, props can make a huge difference in the performance of the boat. Planing times, cruise RPM, top speed etc. It is best to try several different props and determine what works best for how you like to boat. I will most likely end up with two sets of props. One for cruising with the family and one for poker runs etc.
