I AGREE WITH BOBBY I've never had water in my drives enough or to see ,and never but a hot drive in cool water they get
hot running but still have not had water problems .I run amsoil
in motors and red line in gear boxes ,
I'm not trying to argue ,,,just my take on it .

Redline and Amsoil...

I have already decided to switch from a mineral based oil to running Amsoil in my engines....

and I think I am going to give the Redline "Shock Proof" a go in my Bravo One gear cases. :)

Here is a picture of one of my pinion gears. Notice the surface on 3 or 4 teeth. There are not any marks on the drive gears.

KAAMA 12-27-2002 07:50 PM

rbtnt, so what's up with the 3 or 4 teeth on the left side of the picture? Is this gear still adequate for use?

rbtnt 12-27-2002 09:58 PM

The marks on the teeth is where the surface metal has worn off. I'm replacing these gears, but flopping my forward/reverse gears over.

There are no marks, metal missing, heat marks or anything on the forward/reverse gears.

back4more - I just read through this thread about your drives:

http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/s...highlight=lube

Did you do an inspection of your gears at the end of the season?

That is the same wear I had on my Pinion gear and like yours the forward and reverse gears are ok.. but I will flop them, cause the back up gear looks better than the lets go forward gear..

I really think Merc had a bad run of gears.. wish I could trade mine in for a new one..

Here's an update since I last posted in this thread (Post #11 12/22/02). Mr. Gadgets and I have dis-assembled my XR drives and found soft, exessive wear on my pinion gears----and we didn't see the used metalic lube that was drained from my drives until we held the drian pan out in the sun---not good! We are replacing the pinion gears----hopefully, this will cure the problem of excessive wear.

thanks for the update........;)
