I would like someone to run speed test on there un damaged prop with a polished finish,we then will put the satin finish on the prop and check speed again,I would like to have someone do this at no cost to you.but you will recieve a free repair certifacte in the mail/let me know if you would like to try this test and post the results for everyone./Darin p.s only one prop maybe two a 3bld and a 4 bld.post if interested and I will choose.:D

buck183 01-06-2003 11:20 PM

I'll bite if no one else will. Is early April too late for you're needed info? That's when she comes out of storage. :D

Seriously, thinking of repitching current prop anyway. Could use some direction with this. This might help me get a start in the right direction anyway.

Let me know if you're interested.

Mirage is what's on it now.

you are in the hat!!!!! I will post winner in a couple of weeks,/Darin

ursus 01-07-2003 07:28 AM

This would be really great data but you need to control the test pretty close, eg same day, same temp/humidity, same water conditions, same ammount of gas in tank etc any one of those variables can make a mph or 2 difference, good luck let us know what you find out

Turbojack 01-07-2003 07:42 AM

Hope to be ready to test in about a month. Getting ready to put motor back & will try with stock bravo 1 30" 4 blade. May take a little longer to get together since work is getting in way.

Dave1972 01-07-2003 08:04 AM

Darin,
I've got 2 hydromotive 26P 4 blades right now (single engine v-bottom). I was going to send one of them to you to be labbed but I could send both and have them set up identical. Only problem is I'm in Wisconsin and won't have the boat out until probably April. Put me in the hat if interested.

Cord 01-07-2003 08:19 AM

I was recently discussing this with a prop builder. He liked to polish the props to a mirror finish. A couple of reasons. First he fully admits that they are slightly slower. But he counters that even a tiny fracture can be seen and that the eye candy can't be beat. Mmmmm...eye candy...

SeaRay Jim 01-07-2003 10:46 AM

I posted a question about polished vs. satin a while back; this will be interesting.

Mine were done and ran just a few weeks ago (Bob at Full Throttle Marine has it). He tested in near identical conditions (26" BIII) and got a solid 2 MPH. That was from stock to labbed w/pitch and satin finish. I wanted them to look purdy but the goal was to squeeze every MPH possible out of it so satin won!

liquid asset 01-07-2003 11:29 AM

Mirage plus 23'' boat is always ready to go , tested last weekend, and I'm here in Texas, let me know

Intolerant1 01-07-2003 12:59 PM

How do you give it the satin finish? Fine media blast?

Cord 01-07-2003 01:12 PM

I believe that it's done during buffing. They just stop at a coarser wheel.

HOUSTONPROP 01-07-2003 03:58 PM

you are all in the hat !!!!!!!!!!!

testing can be done later,as it is still winter, but we use a spiral sewed loose buff 18"wheel turning 1,750 rpm using a formax product called p-b80 satin glo this produces a great brushed look finish, polishing takes alot more work and sure looks great I have noticed Mercury labbed props are all satin unless other wise specfied.:D we have been high polishing all of are lab jobs but this is soon to change,BUT THIS WILL ALSO KEEP THE PRICE DOWN AND THE SPEED UP,If the test results come out like I think they will.:D

DonMan 01-07-2003 04:29 PM

Darin,
Is this "satin" the same finish you put on my 23" Mirage Plus? It still had a "shiny" appearance to it, but no where near a "polished" finish.

Don Man ,yours is a satin finished prop.:D just looked at the paper work,my memory not that good, thanks to Kim who keeps me in line. :D I do remember that you did not gain as much as you wanted to and Iquote that we will have to thin the blades out alot more,if you want I am willing to do this for you . Darin

Cord 01-07-2003 05:49 PM

I'm suprised that you're not using a 3m deburring wheel. If you havn't tried one, you don't know what you're missing.

HOUSTONPROP 01-07-2003 07:22 PM

send me one

1"1/4 arbor hole 16 to 20" dia.

BOOOOOO...No fair to us poor suckers in he north:mad: Oh , well such is life:rolleyes:

Vinny P 01-07-2003 08:48 PM

I would be interested in conducting this test as well. But, I can't get to the water until early May. I have a '99 259 Convincor. I was also tossing around the idea of re-propping. I am currently running a 24" Bravo 4 blade. I spin it to 5000 r.p.m. I was thinking of a labbed 26" Bravo as a possible alternative.

merlin540 01-07-2003 11:23 PM

satin finish is always faster. i have tested tested and tested on both of my cats. its worth 2 mph. if you are splitting hairs. we have done this on hydo 4 and 5 blades and bravo 1's also a set of spinelli's. see ya charlie white oak auto and marine cint oh.:D

ZP\'d 01-08-2003 08:09 AM

Just wonderfull Darin :D Wish you would have waited till after I had my prop back before starting his thread as now I have to start thinking again.. (and that hurts my brain ya know!:D)

You have probably already polished my Rev 4 to perfection costing me speed, so I'll just break out some sandpaper and scuff it up when it gets back! ;) :D

Hope your new year is going well!

HOUSTONPROP 01-09-2003 12:58 AM

WELL ITS YOUR PROP AND IT IS STILL HERE LET ME KNOW IF YOU WANT SATIN FINISHED? AND EVERYONE WILL GET A FAIR CHANCE .ALSO if you win and live up North we will have to wait for the results.GOOD LUCK TO ALL.Darin

ZP\'d 01-09-2003 06:58 AM

Oh no Darin! I was just rattling your chain!:D :D

Polished is fine for me on the Rev4.. Once I decide on a 3 blade, then we'll consider satin.;)

HOUSTONPROP 01-09-2003 12:46 PM

Darin, I already have a satin-finished prop (from you). I would like to help you out on any testing that you need. Since I am so close, I thought that would be helpful. I also bought a GPS unit since we last spoke, so speeds will be true. Let me know if I can be of assistance. By the way, I am still thinking about having you do more work on my prop. Will let you know.
