Blowin It

O.K. I found a deal on a blower its a weiand 177 and I want to put it on my mild built (500)horse 454 please give me anything I should look for, advice, or setup info that I need to know.
thanks
Martin.

is that 500 horse before being blown?

yes

WHAT COMP. AND CAM ,,, DO YOU HAVE NOW ???

JUSTONCE 01-08-2003 03:34 PM

Thats the beauty of it if I knew I wouldn't have a problem.
I got the motor with no Idea whats in it. I haven't torn it down yet and to be honest with you don't want to if I don't have to.(no time)The only way I know the horsepower figure is by my speed and what I was told.
BTW: my main concern is I don't know what my compression ratio is. doesa anyone know if I can figure it out mby a compression test. (like an equasion to find comp.ratio from PSI comp.) I know I'm lazy but if I blow it up than I'll tear it down...

TELL ME THE CRANKING COMP ,SOLID CAM ?? YOU CAN MAYBE MAKE 3 TO4 LBS ON A SHORT RUN AND KEEP CHECKING THE PLUGS ,KEY WORD HERE,, SHORT ,,,,RUN !!! I'VE GOT A TOOL TO TELL COMP . IF WE LIVED CLOSER ! SORRY CAN'T HELP MORE BUT AS YOU SAID ITS TOUGH NOT KNOWING

A compression test with a guage will only give you cylinder pressure readings. As far as I know, there is no formula that converts cylinder pressure readings to an actual static compression number. There are just too many variables that affect cylinder pressure. However, I have been involved in Drag Racing cars for a number of years. I have seen (but never actually done this myself) engines getting torn down for inspection to check for any rule infractions. The way that the N.H.R.A. tests for static compression ratios without an actual teardown is done by first bringing the piston to B.D.C. then measuring how many c.c.'s of fluid ( I believe they used died alcohol) it takes to fill the cylinder. Next bring the piston to T.D.C. again measure and fill the cylinder with fluid. Once you have those 2 numbers just do the division..

Thanks guys in i'm gonna tear the headsoff I'l just pull the motor and run the numbers though. I think I'm gonna get the carb boost referenced and retard the timing t 30 @ full advance and run the chit out of it . If it blows than have a good excuse to build the motor wilder.

:cool:If you already have 500 ponies out of the 454 you won't be able to use the blower to it's potential. It sounds like your comp. is around 9.5-1.I would slap the 177 on and set up blower at 3lbs.@5000r's and make test run hitting approximately 5000r's for about 5-10 second's,shut down, read plugs and go from there assuming your using pump gas.Of course you gotta make a jet change and start with timing at 30-32.Really,all custom engines[anything other than stock],should be set up on a dyno to fine tune exhaust temps for each cylinder.Good luck with the blower project.

Thanks

You turbo'd a Saturn, Turboing that 454 should be no sweat. ;)
