insatlling a low water pickup for a intercooler
 

where do you install a merc low water pick up . the one that looks like a triangle with the Speedo pito tube on it. I assume on the transom, but where. I thought it would go right at the very bottom but that's where the drain plug is.

I would like to use this for a inter cooler. Is this style pickup okay for that ?????

you mean a transom mounted pickup?

Can go anywhere on the Vee that will remain in contact with the water at speed.

Be careful mounting it too far off to one side since the drag will affect handling.

Be careful mounting it too close to the drive centerline since it will affect the water that the prop gets...

You may want to check out the manufactuerer maximum recommended water pressure for the intercooler. This past summer, I was talking with a fellow Sunsation owner (32') that had twin HP500EFI Whipple (side mount) kits. He too used a transom mounted water pickup for the IC's. I don't remember the exact numbers, but he said Whipple recommended not exceeding 15 PSI in the IC's. At 80 mph, the Sunsation was seeing 40 - 50 psi in the IC's. He eventually got the water pressure down by diverting a bunch of water flow with a T-valve, but it took a lot of tuning. Something to ponder I suppose.

good thing about transom pickups, is you can file them down till you get the water pressure and flow you desire - the more you file off em, the less drag you get...
