Oil temp thermostats
in reading up on oil temp thermostats, I really like the Keith Eickert oil filter/ thermostat. This would eliminate the big mess in the bilge every time I change the oil. ( stock Merc HP = sideways mount filter:crazy: )
Who elso make a good oil thermostat????? Kurt. |
I am running the perma-cool oil stat from summit or jegs for around $35. It s a simple device. I was impressed with it. My oil temps warmed up alot quicker and the normal temp when running were around 200-210 degrees

Hello Guys,
I have used the Eickert piece in several versions with great success. A bit pricey, though. The piece Travis mentioned will generally do the job on anything not requiring a LOT of oil flow and you can get an oil filter bracket from several sources-check with your local round-tracker or you might try Canton oil filters. They are relatively small and not too hard to change and not make a mess. Please do run a thermostat!!! Many options are available. Eickert is the most trick and the prettiest, in my opinion. pm if I can help. |
I'm very happy with the ones from Billet Marine.

I am running the Perma-Cool T-stat and am happy with the results. It eliminated the milk in my valve covers.

Travis and RLW. Is this the one you guys are using?
|
I third the Perma-cool. Yes that is the one. With my orginal oil cooler & no therm. oil pressure would start out at 80+cold & drop down to about 35 after a hard run. Now since I put a hoss of a oil cooler in with the perma cool oil pressure is still 80+cold & lowest I have seen it is 65. Oil therm also helps the oil warm up quicker.

Right on Guys!!
The Perma Cool is great. The CV Products and the Eickert are prettier and will flow more oil, but the Perma Cool flows enough for almost any cruiser type boat!! Have a great day!!!! |
A fourth vote for the Permacool, although I wish they made a 210-215 degree model.
|
I just bought the KE oil coolers. My research found the Permacools are only 190 degree while the KE are 210. Higher oil temp is a must with the cold water flowing through my boat motors (no water thermosat). The KE's are bigger and should flow more also. Price was much higher for the KE. The old saying "you get what you pay for".

While were on this subject. I picked one up from summit, now I need to know the oil flow direction for a 502 Mag MPI??? After looking at the directions on the oil Stat, Theres a diagram on how to plumb it in line. Are there arrows on the remote filter housing showing the flow direction???
Thanks |
yes, there are on my 454.

Heres how I plumbed mine. The hose on the far right is oil going out from the block adaptor to the filter. The return from the filter loops down to the bottom right on the thermostat. I used a pipe nipple to connect the thermostat to the return port on the block adaptor.

I'm running a mocal unit which fits under the filter like a sandwich adapter. Only wish it had a litlle higher opening temp. It is around 180. Same size as a sandwich adapter, and has larger ports and passageways. Got it from racerpartswholesale.com

The one on the lower left..

That looks like an even cleaner install than the permacool. Ill try it on engine #2.
|
It's exactly what I was looking for. I can't remeber what oso'r told me about it..
One thing to watch for. I think it is only made to fit a gen 4 block. I have it mounted to a gen 6 and had to take a little material off of the center part so that it would tighten before bottoming out. No big deal. |
1500,
What's a "cruiser type" boat? What is the line between the flow capabilities of a Perma Cool and a more macho KE type unit? What would be wrong with 2, count 'em, 2 PCools in parallel for $70 instead of the gaddawful $450 KE mother... |
You might try www.cvproducts.com
They have an inline oil thermostat that looks familiar with a choice of 190 or 215* thermostats. They have a lot of other neat stuff ment for cars racers that will work great on a boat. They are trying to lear to speak "boat", but they are very polite and helpful. They also are much CHEAPER. |
I wanna say that the mocal was around ~$80. Has 1/2npt ports, but uses a PF-24 filter.
|
That Mocal unit looks good.
Do they have a website? Thanks, Kurt. |
Got it from racerpartswholesale.com. Remember the gen 6 mod and the different oil filter........
