Switching to Imco shortie?
Who has done it in a twin engine application?Did you switch to a 4 Blade? How much bigger if any did you have to prop up?What were your total costs drives and props and what did you gain???
|
Don, Tinkerboater did a switch to 2" IMCO shorties last year and had good results for his application/boat.

We have done shorties on numerous applications. They worked so well that we kept two in stock just for testing. We have seen as much as 6 MPH on a cigarette bullet, a 33' Powerplay picked up about 5 MPH. They worked best on older boats, and conventional V bottoms, but almost all pick up speed.
Feel free to call me with any questions. Steve |
Steve have you ever done an older Sonic???I have a 1993 and would love to try it but am a little gun shy...its a ton of money if it wont work for me.
|
No, but they have worked on every conventional v-bottom we've ever done. Call me to discuss your set up.

Don you are welcome to try mine (just don't break them please)
I gained two to three mph and was able to go up 2 inches in pitch. I gained 300 rpm over stock length. The big gain was not in speed but in handling. My boat is very bow heavy and needs a lot of positive trim. This caused the boat to get very bow high when coming off a wave. With the shorter drive I don't have to trim as high so the boat rides much more level. In rough water the boat runs very flat now. I have gone past faster and longer boats only because my boat stayed down and I didn't have to back off the throttles as much. I was running 23 mirage props with the stock engines at 5100 rpm. I then built the engines up to about 600 HP each. The new engines turned the same props at 5700 rpm. I had a hard time getting on plane with the three blade props so I went with 26 pitch Bravo props (labed) at 5400rpm. I then put on the 2 inch shorties and gained 200 - 300 rpm so I am now running 28 ( unlabbed ) Bravos at 5100 rpm. They will be labbed by MERC. before the summer. The props slip a little getting on plane but even in 2-3 footers it still gets up the same. I just hold the throttle at 4000 rpm and it just comes up in about 3-4 seconds. |
Steve I would love to try your lowers it would be a great comparison to post here on the board! Do you have your 26" props yet? I an also running 23 Mirages now so they might be close. How big a deal is it to switch lowers?Do the drives need to be drained? If I get my motor back together soon We could try it soon as the ice is off the lake and not interfear with your boating! It could be a stretch if I need to find some props to borrow I have a 25 4 blade patriot I guess I could buy another so I have a pair Teague has then cheap.....
we can discuss the plan if Dave has a winter Party!!!! Thanks |
