Hey Jon btw any wet dates yet or is it still the old sliding scale thing!
Project Time=(first time estimate*2) to the next time scale. I like that and it is becoming tragically true!!:D |
GLH I have no idea. Got my brother graduation in upstate NY next weekend that I have to go to. So next weekend is killed.
We shall see. |
Hey Jon hows the project going haven't seen any new pictures or heard any updates. Love to see more pictures of your progress. Rick G.

Ok finally some more progress. I am almost ready for the glass guy. Just a few details and he can come over. I hope to be ready for him by Thursday of this week. This is the new look for the dash.

This is how I decided to tackle the center of the fairing. This gave more strength to the fairing and also is going to keep it easy to keep clean. :D:D

This was a pain. I had to take off the inside grab rail for when I re-gellcoat the inside. It will also make it easier to do the glass work on the inside and grind things down.

Finally got to get some updates on line. This is a picture of what we call a OOOOOOOPS!!! I built this all up and realized it it going to catch water in there. SO what I am going to do is to put a drain in there that I will make up. I looked at other options but they all required me to do things that were less apealing then the drain. If you look to the right side of the compass you will see that the water will pool up in that area.

This is a picture of the dash cut outs. The new dash switches and guages I designed myself and had buit by Team Marine. They did a great job and I was extreamly happy with what they did for me. The layout is this: Large hole top left is for the guages, just under that is for the acces. switches like the bilge pumps and blowers and hatch mechanism, top right is for the trim indicators, middle is for the trim buttons, and the lower of course is the new trottle location. The old layout had the throttles up were the indicators now are.

When I talked to my glass guy he said that if I did not want resin on it that I had to glass it up. So I went nuts and put thick plastic on EVERYTHING. I spent about 4 hours taping the thing up. I think that this will save me a lot of time after we are done with the glass lay up.

This is the finished look from the side. The one thing that a friend of mine came up with was to make the lip at the top blend in a little with the side by making a piece that tapers down the side slowly. You can better see this on picture 131 if you look at the top of the fairing and see were the kind of stripes are. I think it made a HUGE difference to the look instead of having a lip that just sticks up.
|
I then had to round down all the edges. I did some with a router but for the most part it had to be done by hand and took a little bit to make them all look the same. I have a little more work to do before the glass guy gets to my shop on Friday. He was sapposed to be there today but he had a customer screw up his day. :(

Jon, don't you love it when a project comes together? Your boat is starting to look good. BTW, noticed the project car in front of the open garage door. Looks little changed from Jan.
You know my boat has been plagued with mechanical problems this spring/summer, most of them my own making. So my faring was back-burnered. I spent today knocking off little "dress out" projects on my boat, and then waxed the deck. As I was doing that, I just giggled that all the major repair work is currently done, and I get to do the cosmetic stuff now. What a great feeling. Hope you get to feel it soon. FYI: Ran the boat for the first time last weekend, with out a faring or a windshied. As we talked about, the wind in my face was less with out the windshild, though the total wind against my body was greater. |
Chart I am a LONG way from that feeling :(
|
My buddies all have fountains with the aluminum ones that you can upohlster and put a padding on the top of them, they look great and are strong. There is one bad point they are all seeing though, corrosion under the paint at every screw point.
I like what you guys are doing it looks strong and more importantly it goes with your boat lines, good work. Keep em comming. |
Looking good Jon glass guy coming soon I hope :D
|
Friday I hope. We are going to get together at like 6am and do it up.

Jon, I am really indebted to you for the heads up on Nydacore honeycomb. I ordered a bunch from Composites 1 and did all the horizontal and vertical panels in my 35 Cigarette Awesome interior with the honeycomb and 1/8" mahogany plywood with epoxy. There are some pics under 35 Awesome in the Cigarette owner's section. I saved at least 350 pounds. I was also able to do curved vertical panels. It's really looking good I think. Many thanks, and your project looks really nice. Bob.
|
Bob glad it worked out well for you. I am off to look at your project as the interior of my boat is next.

italian car or ice cream. I just wondered because we have a DB2 in the family and we may be interested in selling it.

Jon, the project looks good , when is this boat going to hit the water? Will you be going to the milk run in VT.? Keep up the good work.

Thanks Masi. I was really hoping to make the Milk run but unfortunatly am almost possitive that I will not be able to. :(

This is after we laid up the glass. It is one piece of DB glass that is going up and over the top and back down the other side. I had a friend help me out with this as you have to move fast with the resin. His words of wisdome were to get the resin out of the cup. He said to not sit there and try and get the resin to soke in in a small area but to just spread it out all over the glass and let it soak in itself. Then he said go back and get it to soak in. Seemed to work very well as we had no resin kick in the bucket.

One of the suggestions that I would make to some one that is tackling a project like this is to make sure your surfaces are very flat. I just ground these down and it was to rough and if you look close you can see some air bubbles. Nothing to freak out about but not perfect.

This part with all the different angles had to be done in 9oz glass. The DB would have been to hard to work onto all the different angles.
|
We used a projuct called Cavasile (sp) on the inside corners to make it so that the glass could make the corners with out airbubbles. We just mixed it up thick and put it on with a trowel.

Well after quite a bit of consultation with a couple of OSO's pro's I made a mix of projuct to start fairing out the glass. It was easy to sand and seems to stick really well. I am currently spreading this stuff on with a brush and puddy knif. I am then sanding it with a DA long board and a hutchens mud slinger.

This is before I sanded it (sorry for the crappy quality. My cammera would not focus on this stuff.
|
Keep knocking at it your going forward Jon.
:frog: |
Now I see what you have been up to. I like the look of the windscreen. I'd like to swing by some time and check out the project in person some time. Is the boat in Manchester? I'm real good at passing tools and holding beer...
|
Groove any time you want to stop by let me know. I am ussually there on the weekends. This Saturday I will be up in NH to see the wooden boat show. Friend of mine is a judge. I think it will be cool to go check out and Pam wants one real bad. Sunday afternoon I will be back at it again.
Jon |
Jon, the fairing project looks great! Keep up the great job and the updates
|
Thanks :D
I have been working on it a bit lately but not taking many pictures. Not much to see really as it is just sand the stuff down tell you see the glass then put more filler on it then sand it down again. Lots of work on the old arms I tell ya but it is getting close to the point of maybe getting to actually spray on the primer. I hope by the end of this weekend. Jon |
