powder coat removal
any tips or tricks to get this stuff off one place i went to told me to burn it off that just doesnt seem right
help? |
take it to a GOOD sand blaster. If they know how to take if off they will be able to do it NO problem. I had mine done that way, and that was after I tried to sand blast it myself for a couple hours and got no were. They did the blasting and repowdercoated them for I think it was 180 bucks. TIME IS MONEY :D:D

You can strip them with Mar-hyde Tal strip air craft stripper. Use a (respirator). It was about an 5 beer job but they look nice now!

I had a billet gas cap with the purple "fusion coat" powder coating starting to chip. I let it soak in a can of carb cleaner for a while and it wiped right off. If I recall I think it loosened up in about 30 minuted but it took longer to get everything out of the corners, etc.
The cleaner to use is the "dip type" that comes in a one gallon paint can. Should be able to get it at any auto parts store. I think you can also get it in 5 gallon size for larger items, but not sure where. Once it's done it looks perfect!! Good Luck! Jeff |
Yep.
Powder is just a plastic. Anything that will dissolve or soften plastic will work on powder. Heat. Airplane stripper. Solvent. Jeff, never seen a DOG tree before. DogWOOD yes, DOG no. Lotus AND dog tree. Life is good... |

PVC Primer
The cleanest, fastest way to remove powder coat is PVC Primer. Just dab it on and wipe it off in a few seconds. Just did several parts today, took less than 5 mins.

Pantera 24 are you kidding me?Like pvc pipe primer?

CAREFULL WHAT YOU USE!!!
A few years back i stripped a set of throttles...i dont remember what i used but i guess it must have been some cheap stuff. Anyway what the powder coater tried to coat the throttles later he had a tough time with them cause there was a residual solvent in the metal and it made the powercoating bubble when they heated it up! The re-did the base plates twice before it stopped! |
Dyno,
I wouldn't kid you...it worked great! Clean, little mess and the dabber worked better than having to soak the parts and waste cleaner. Try it, you'll be amazed as I was. |

The re-did the base plates twice before it stopped! Some powdercoaters will even preheat the parts to bring to the surface and burn off any residue before applying the coating. For example with valve covers and carb parts, oil and gas will actually penetrate the metal itself, only to come to the surface when heated during the powdercoating process. Just because it looks and feels clean, doesn't mean it is. Just a heads up. |
Carb cleaner should remove any residue, I'd guess...

Jeff,
My dog's vertical leap is about 2 inches... |
Hey HPJunkie...
Nice job on the polishing job!!! I noticed the valve covers - It took me quite a few hours to grind off the finish off of those... Nothing would take it off. I haven't the guts to do what you did... Good job. Where do you get this stuff??? I have since moved on to the 2-piece valve covers, so mine are availiable if you what them???? [email protected] Red Racer |
