I realize this is a car question but everyone here seems pretty knowledgeable in many areas. So I figure it cant hurt to ask. Is there anyway to unfreeze or unhook parking brake on a 1999 ford Taurus. Thanks for your replies.

I believe you have to unhook the cable from the brake. It's usually the cable that will seize up. You may have to take a wheel off the get at the brake.

First question to ask: Does the car have drum or disc rear brakes?

If it has drum brakes, chances are you wont be able to just pull off the drum because the parking brake shoe will be holding it on. You will have to disconnect the cable which goes to each drum from where they tee off from the main cable coming from the parking brake pedal. That MIGHT free up the brake, but the part that is stuck could be the shoe inside the drum. If that is the case you will have to beat the $hit out of the drum to get it off to get to the problem.

If it has disc brakes, if I remember correctly ( on your car ) the parking brake cable attaches to the back of the calipers. That means that the calipers apply the parking brake. You may be able to pry or cut the cable off and just release the calipers. Some cars, although I don't think yours, have the parking brake shoes that ride inside of the rear rotors ( sometimes called a hat ). That means that there is a seperate brake shoe inside the rotor for the parking brake.

It does have drum brakes. I did see that spot where you are talking about where splits and goes to each wheel. Thanks for your reply.

On drums, more times than not, the cable is rusted inside the spiraled cable housing going to each rear wheel. You may have to back off the self adj. to get the drum off.
