1993 2.5 efi's good, bad , ugly

I am looking at a pair of 1993 merc 2.5 efi's one with zero hrs on power head and one with like 70. They are both clean and have updated efi units. I am looking for input on these motors. Anything you know about them that may help me makes my decision to buy them or not. I am also getting a new in crate power head for 2k from the guy along with this deal. Is this a good price? Any help or info would be great.

I guess you are talking about the265 hp motors. I have never owned any but what I have seen they do not seem as near reliable as current motors. On the race circut it seems many 2.5 powered boats did not finish every race. Maybe you would get better feed back on www.screamandfly.com Goodluck

Yeah, which "flavor" of motors you talking about?

ok we are talking about the late 1993 2.5 efi 260hp. 4 bolt main, heavy duty rods and pistons. updated efi's 20" midsections

The centerhorn FI motors are good motors, and if they are "stock" and you prop for 7200-7400 you should be happy with them.

If they have had ANY modifications whatsoever, then IMHO you should get the RAPAIR FI controller mod that allows you to adjust the mixture setting. Set the mix for a tan-to-brownish piston crown color after a hard run.

Also run a compression check on the cylinders.

Sound like a potential bargain - but you never know.

I agree. The ones we ran on the race boat were awsome. They held together for a number of years.
