Chrysler 426 hemi

Got a really neat advertising book on the hemi engine from Chrysler that was probably sent to past product buyers. I got thinking about Chryslers old extinct marine division and wondered if anyone ever ran the hemi in any form of offshore boat. I know they once ran the Miss Chrysler crew unlimited hydro which was powered by 2 or more of these engines.
Chrysler is now building 426 hemis and are available in three levels begining at 10k minus headers for the street rod crowd.

Hemis are something!!
They are a major pain in a Bravo situation, though. The mounts don't fit, the bell housing, drive hubs, exhaust, wiring............................................ ...... If they gave you the motor and 10k, you still might be in the hole!!!

Sonic30ss 01-29-2003 03:06 PM

I freaking love my Hemi. Ran 440's for years with 6 pacs and nitrous, the Hemi on a single dominator runs stronger than the 440 with a super stock high rise 6 pac intake and nitrous.
I just can't seem to find the room in the Sonic for two. Maybe if I rip out the rear bench and stagger them MMMMMMMMMMM HE HE HE. No honney it's not a race boat!
It would be one sweet ride though, maybe Outerlimits, since they build cubic dollar boats could do one. Lets see 51' sport yacht twin supercharged 600+ inch injected Hemis............ somebody stop me. This is what happens when you go from the street to the water!

How about a mid 30'cat hull, pair of hemis and those neat Trimble surface drives. Unique and $$$
With the cats width you could plump those exhausts and possibly those Trimble drives could match the Hemis.

And speaking of big block Chrysler stuff ....Two years ago I saw a wood HackerCraft (possibly replica) powered by a inboard Viper V-10 that was really impressive.

I Crewed on a 500 inch Hemi powered GP Inboard Hydro during the mid 90's .They are more complicated than a Big Chevy But nothing sounds Like a Hemi!!!The owner Roger Mahan, Said that during his offshore career,That he wanted to build a Hemi powered Offshore but could not convince his partner.

How about a couple wipplecharged 5.7 next generation engines. Light weight, well over 500 hp per hemi, wow factor. Lets see, income tax refund right around the corner..........

glassdave 01-29-2003 08:50 PM

speaking of Dustin . . .wasnt he working on a pair of whipple charged hemi's for a boat. new 426's i think. i just seem to remember a picture of them being posted. it was a while ago though. all i remember is they were bad a$$

interceptor . . .holy crap, i completly forgot about your boat again till i just read this thread an saw your post. i have been working like 24/7 on the franchise i just opened (colorall) and have been some what pre occupied. we opened on jan 20th. prior to that we were doing the setup and hiring. i have not yet been able to make it up to the detroit area. i'm very sorry i havent been much of a help.

by the way . . whats a Trimble drive. . . just curious.

mcollinstn 01-29-2003 09:28 PM

I remember several of the old Hemi boat motors. Rated at 425 hp they were.

Buddy has a Coronet with a 530 inch Iron block Hemi running aluminum Indy heads and two 700 Edelbrocks on an Indy crossram. No expense spared. Way overkill for a street motor (I forget what brand but he runs the same rocker setup you see on topfuel motors). 13:1 and 885hp thru 4" Flowmasters. Can you say "No Traction?" (You'll be able to if you ride in it...)

Sonic30ss 01-30-2003 08:39 AM

mcollinstn,
that's cool I know the feeling of a rubber wagon, I'm running 432" @ 650hp and sidways is just part of the fun. I can't imagine what 885 is like!

Interceptor 01-30-2003 11:48 AM

GlassDave,
I had forgot the correct name for the drives. I was thinking Pulse trimmable drives.
If you do get free let me know. Actually if your interested in doing the work I'd discuss the scope again and bring the boat to you.
You can e-mail me at [email protected]

thanks, ed

Does a bellhousing exist, which allows the mating of a crash box to a Hemi?

fred 02-14-2004 05:15 AM

There was a thread recently of Dustin Whipples cat with a pair of hemi's with twin whipple chargers on each motor!....it seems like there was a video of it running as well....quite an impressive package to say the least....its on their web page; www.whipplesuperchargers.com

platinum 02-14-2004 06:12 AM

Fred,

I recall the Whipple motors. I thought they were mated to a Bravo, though...

Mopars rule!!! With all the top fuel parts available puttning together a motor wouldn't be a problem.Keith Black block,Anderson heads.Problem is Virtualy every bracket, mounts, exhaust, everything would have to be custom made. Maybe if I win the lottery?

TomZ 02-15-2004 11:47 PM

There's someone out there that makes a kit for setting up a big block Mopar behind a Bravo... damn... can't remember the company, but they are out there (I don't think it was a whole lot expensive to do it either).

I love Chryslers... streeted/raced them for years (first with a 340 and then 440+ after...). One of the best rod/stroke ratios in the business (RB motors). With Indy heads (on the Wedge and the Hemi) they are unbelievable.

One day when I have more money than I know what to do with, I'll have a blown Hemi-powered offshore boat. Until then my small block Chevy will have to suffice.

Whiteknuckle 02-16-2004 01:52 PM

I'm not absolutely sure about this, but I believe Bob Kaiser and Erroll Lanier ran a Chrysler Powered Offshore boat back in the early 80's. I don't think it was real conpetitive at that time. They then went to the aluminum Cougar Cat with Merc furnished BB's when they dominated the open class. I used to have a poster of the Chyrsler powered boat, I should try to find it.
