Jacobs Ignitions
Do the Jacobs Ignition systems control the advance curve? If so how and if not what does? Also Any comments on the system good AND bad:confused:   Does anyone have any contacts on retailers who sell them?
|
The distributor still controls the advance with the jacobs ignition. I have been using them for years with Mallory Dist. and have been very happy with them. Your best bet is to get it directly from them I believe they are in Texas and will sell to you over the phone. They do exactly what they claim.

A few years back I purchased two complete systems. I was impressed with their concept and thought they would be the ticket. After swapping out two modules that failed I made them refund my money....just didn't work out. During the lst failure the motor was breaking up mid range and up and Jacobs maintained it couldn't be their module. I went back to stock system and motor was again normal. They then agreed to replace module but wanted to charge me a prorate. I supposedly had a "lifetime" warranty originally. That was when I decided I didn't need their systems any longer.

The system I had on the mustang failed me once. That's too many times. However, the jacobs nitrous mastermind is a beautiful thing!

You guys are CRAZY!!!
Hey Bobby, I've had my Jacob ignitions for 101 years and they haven't failed me yet! :p Yep!---I think I'll just run right out and buy another Jacob's ignition system as a back-up!
As Foghorn Leghorn would say; "Now ya know----I,....I say now ya know I'ma just a messin' with yo head now donchya son?" ;) :D :D |
Kamma had me worried !!
Floridason climax is 22 miles from whitehall !!! I spent most of my time in Chatham VA. Hargrave miliatary |
Jacobs has super advertisements and that's how they sell them. I think that you'll find that Crane and MSD are better and hold up longer. I would take the Crane over the MSD also. I have used both on many applications and the Crane is more modern technoligy. Also, has built in adjustable rev limiter.

I wanted to ask bobby daniels what the dyno figure differences were between the two Jacobs units he gave away and the Crane or MSD units you replaced them with. Should be an interesting comparison to see the actual HP, torque, and V.E. figures for these boxes compared.

that would be interesting. I had a conversation with a fellow that ran a pro stock car a few years ago about ignitions. His thoughts were that he had tried many different systems and didn't really see any difference. He did feel the individual coils was probably on the right track with a crank type trigger. Most important point was to have a well maintained system with decent technology. Just another one of those opinions. |
ABOUT TWO YEARS AGO I DYNO TESTED SEVERAL BOXES. THE JACOBS WAS DOWN ON POWER A MAX. OF ABOUT 8HP FROM THE MSD6 BOX. THE 7AL WAS 10 BETTER ALMOST 11 THAN THE JACOBS APROX. THE BIG CONSIDERATION IS NOT THE HP ISSUE BUT THE MOTOR RAN CLEANER ACCORDING TO THE 2GAS MACHINE AND MY EAR. STILL THE BIGGEST CONSIDERATION FOR ME IS HOW MANY PEOPLE OTHER THAN MYSELF DEPEND ON MSD. YOU GUYS ARE RIGHT THERE IS NOT ALOT OF SHEER HP DIFFERENCE AS THEY ARE ALL ALMOST THE SAME, BUT DEPENDABILITY IS ALSO VERY IMPORTANT.

GEAR HEAD YOUR RIGHT ,,,JACOBS ADS DO SELL ,CRANE DOES WORK WELL THE M S D 6 DIGITIAL BOX IS NEAT ADJUST REV ,AND OTHER FEATURES INCLUDING MORE SPARK
PLEASE NOTE ITS NOT PROVEN I'M GOING ON THEIR RECORD |
My question was posed strictly on an informational basis, not a confrontational one. Being a boater also I understand the importance of reliability(doing most of my boating next door on Lake Ontario) but I thought this was a very good opportunity to gather some real world data that I wouldnt have had access to otherwise. Having never seen any side by side comparisons on marine ignitions I was very interested in Bobbys post from a performance perspective keeping reliability a seperate issue.

rmbuilder, you are right and I am wrong
rmbuilder,
When I read your post, the word that popped into my mind was reliability and from there I was a little long winded. I wasn't really trying to hammer on you. I see that you just became a member last October and it probably was not the most tactful way (on my part) of welcoming a relatively new member on board. My last post sounded a little on the short side of grace--- and I am sorry. I guess I just didn't type it out the right way. I'm going to delete it and hope you will except my apology. :) Mark/KAAMA |
The thing that attacted me to MSD is that you can get them at any speed shop if you have problems and we all have had them even with stock Merc ignitions you can get a cap and rotor at Auto Zone if you need to. I've had one of mine in for service and they fixed it for the price of shipping....my .02
