Removing Old Name from Stern

1 Attachment(s)
I need to get this name of the back of my new boat it is painted over all the finishes and has already started fading and coming off. I did a search here and got Oven Cleaner, Nail polish remover, acetone and the works. Anyone can give me a task sheet to follow and a degree of difficulty for an idiot like me apart from.

1. Take it to the local goofy fiberglass man to do it.
2. Pay him for his work.

I am actually very familiar with #2 on the list and would like to see if I can actually do any form of a task that involves dexterity of any kind.
Thanks in advance for your help.

G.L.

I've been told it's " bad luck"
to rename a boat :D:D

I already have the "Offical Denaming Ceremony Process" to follow I just need the chemical process!

Lightly scrub it with a PLASTIC pot scrubbing pad (propelene pad), or the softest scotch brite pad available, I think white. soaked in acetone (fingernail polish remover). The pad will give it a little abbrasion w/out scratching the gelcoat. Something that you can still buff out the swirl marks later.

If the acetone doesn't touch it step up to paint thinner. Check first in an inconspicuous spot to see it discolors, but it looks like it is on white.

Remember to keep a towel handy so you can keep it from running down the boat. You will leave a ghost image of the name, a good rubbing compound, and some elbow grease should remove it.

just my thoughts Jason

My buddy re-named his boat and had nothing but trouble with it, I heard it was bad luck too. I didn't change the name on mine, call me superstitious because I am.:D

"easy off" oven cleaner

I am leary of the cemical stuff. I would get 600 grit sand paper on a rubber block and wet sand it off and then buff it out again. This will do two things. One it will get it off. Two it will remove the the raise were the letters were so hopefully IF you are lucky you will no longer be able to see were the letters used to be.

Thanks for all your help.

Regarding the "luck" factor I try rely on luck to a minimum but for the skeptics.

Easy Off oven cleaner. I've done it on 2 boats, no problems.

How long do you leave the oven cleaner on?

If there were no such thing as bad luck, I'd have no luck so I left the name on my boat alone! "PROBABLE CAUSE" people always ask if I'm an attorney.

removing old name

i have removed 3 names from boats over the years and do not
beleive it brings "bad luck".

there is a product that i have used every time called jabsco paint remover for fiberglass surfaces. it is especially formulated to use on fiberglass surfaces.
after use wash with plain water and a mild soap, then use a light grit compound to take off the outline of the old name and buff entire transom.

this stuff is top notch!!!

Just spray it on and the letters will run right off. Just watch it and maybe rub it a little with a towel. Wash it off with water.
I was rubbing off a couple letters/hour with acetone.
BTW, dont use Easy Off on a painted boat, duh!
