2000 454mag efi ?

i have the 454mag (385hp) and wanted to bump up the hp. and was wondering if i lost the efi and went carbed leaving the bottom end alone and did the heads manifold cam ect. if that was the way to go and what increases would i expect to see i was going to supercharge but im trying to keep cost down or is it better to just start fresh and leave that moter alone?

I am interested in hearing what the the motor gurus have to say about this too. It seems that most people in this situation either go with a Whipple or procharger.

hotrodtodd32, how many hp are you looking for and what condition is the motor in now? That engine is a good starting point, just need to know where you want to go.

hotrodtodd32 02-14-2003 02:53 PM

the engine has 55 hours on it boat was a left over i would like to make realiable hp 500or more i live in vancouver canada and hp costs a lot more up here than the usa.to do a whipple set up is 15000, with exhaust steering ram i have a baja h2x and a hp500 pushes that boat to 77mph i get 68.4gps now i would just like to be able to say to a builder do this this and that any suggestion would be app.

For my money, I would either sell them or store them and start over. Your pistons now are a problem. To make hp and live, you can use your block and crank, but not much else. You can build another engine and still have the original to put back in and sell the boat. Sorry for the bad opinion, but you could spend a lot and lose a LOT.

that is what i thought ill just have a 600hp n/a engine built and take it from boat to boat any ideas on a bullet proof combo?

blown1500 02-14-2003 03:42 PM

How many combos would you like? Tell me more about what you want-bottom end or top end, fuel efficiecy, etc. and I'll offer a couple.:D :D

blown 1500 i would some day like to move up to a 28'boat and have it in the 80"s so maybe the way to go is build something that is detuned now for the 24' and be able to tune it for the future fuel is a concern but life is what i am after i dont need to go 100mph with my hair on fire i boat on a lake only and two cheap for twins gas is 81cents per litre i could see a lot of 500.00 days with twins i dont go fast all the time but would like the option thanks inadvance.:)

if you are decent with hand tools find a used whipplecharger and install it yourself, or have a friend help out, give someone who is a good wrench turner a couple hundred bucks to help install it, that 454 mag is a good platform, it has the 4 bolt block, good steel crank, the big 7/16 rods and forged pistons, it has the big square port heads on it also, if you go the non supercharger route you will need to pull the heads, for some port work, replace the cam and the Exhaust, because the bigger cam will cause water reversion, so you will need some CMI's or something along those lines, then a intake manifold, a new carb, flame arrestor, and so on, you could spend 2500.00 just on parts[or more], half the price of a supercharger kit at 5000.00, speed cost money, question is is it worth it to you

hotrodtodd32 02-15-2003 11:40 AM

h2xmark the problem i seem to be having is finding someone to install the whipple that was my first choice i even tryed to get dustin to give me a list of people that sell his product in b.c. but haven't heard he is a very busy guy.:( the people who run superchargers up hear blowup there moters every month because we dont have the engine guys up here like you boys do :hothead: the guys with supercharges up here are getting rid of them and going n/a personally i would love to drive to the u.s. and have my moter done and setup but exchang and duty would screw me :o
