Outdrive/redline oil

I was going to run redline synthetic lube in my outdrive this year. I see they sell redline shock Heavy, medium and light? what 1 should I run? :)

bobby daniels 02-18-2003 03:03 PM

In your boat unless its blown run the med. or light .!!!!I use the heavy only in heavy ,high H.P. boats But either of the above will work fine ,,, -I've used it for years :D :D :D

Wally 02-18-2003 03:49 PM

Call Red Line directly and ask the tech guys..they will tell you what you should run in your app. They told me to run the Shock proof heavy in my Scarab with TRS drives. :)

Donzi38ZX 02-18-2003 04:13 PM

I have only seen Heavy, light and superlight. Would your Medium recomendation be the light? I'm not really trying to be a smarta$$, comes naturally:D , but I would like to know as I am thinking of running shockproof in my Bravo XZs behind HP500EFIs. Also would you always recomend shockproof in marine outdrives?

Donzi38ZX 02-18-2003 04:21 PM

I called redline they told me shockproof heavy for virtually all I/O applications due to excessive load. He even said to use heavy behind a V6. Recommended light in a superlight outboard setup. Didn't sound like they typically recommended superlight for marine application. Now where do I buy it?

bobby daniels 02-18-2003 05:24 PM

Yep they really like the heavy and we tried the different weights and the heavy does so less wear in 1 season in heavy boats or boats with alot of h.p.!!

never use super lite ------
summit has it or 803-329-8658 can ship it to you with your app.I'd stay with the heavy ,and do what they say ,they sure know better than me :D :D :D

any of it is killer stuff !!!!!!!!!!!

BadDog 02-18-2003 05:50 PM

Dang, I will add that to my order, I am bangin out a list for Summit right now that would finance a small country!

CAP071 02-18-2003 06:06 PM

I found a whole page of redline oils at WWW.FISHERMOTORSPORTS.COM
they sell it by the gallons or by quart. I wanna see who has it cheapest?

CAP071 02-18-2003 06:09 PM

OPPS make that WWW.FISHERMOTORSPORT.COM
NOT SPORTS I found it under the lubrication link on the home page

CAP071 02-18-2003 06:19 PM

I just checked both are $7.95 a quart.

jafo 02-19-2003 07:13 AM

I've used the Heavy in my Alphas on my Formula for years- never a problem- recommended by RedLine. Very good lube!

Wally 02-19-2003 09:00 AM

I think everyone sells it for the same rice right around $8/qt
if you go to www.racerwholesale.com you can get 10% off if you buy a case....thats about the only discount i have found on it anywhere.. :)

Back4More 02-19-2003 10:34 PM

We run the "Heavy" in our IMCO SC's...so far so good!

sdelim25 02-20-2003 03:26 PM

I use the Shockproof heavy in my XZ drive. What I noticed first about it, was it shifted in and out of gear easier. I bought it at www.myoilshop.com. It is priced at $7.75 a quart.

cap, What they said. Heavy
Shifts really good compared to the Mrec stuff.

Mike, Whaaaatsupp, How was the snowmobile trip?

MIKEHTMSR24 02-21-2003 04:55 PM

something to choose from

When I bought my Imco SC I asked what drive oil to use. The man himself said none of it is bad. In our race boat we were using the Red stuff and it worked good but wasn't working at because of the higher rpm the boat was turning. We switched to Torco and it has been working for us.
From what I have been told??? that's what is in the #6 drive from Mercury????

Give them a call and hear their story. Just one more to add to the confusion list.

Redline gear oil stinks!!

It literally smells horrible. It works great, but stinks!! :D

WETTE VETTE 02-21-2003 09:04 PM

Amsoil motor oil smells pretty good and racing fuel smells great, but Red Line gear lube stinks!!:p

CAP071 02-21-2003 09:12 PM

OH GOD! I love the smell of Cam 2 racing fuel

m1super90 04-18-2003 10:11 AM

Shockproof is a GL5 lube with about 3% limited slip additive. It's useful in systems with hypoid gearsets calling for up to 140 weight mineral oil. Heavy is what you want to use in a noncompetitive application. The Light's are for applications where minimum drag is required and durability is not an issue. E.g., racing applications where teardowns are frequent. It's called Shockproof because the calcium base provides some amount of shock loading relief. So, the impression that an outdrive shifts with less engagement shock makes sense. I'm going to put this into my outdrives but have a problem, no available hydro hoist at the moment. So, no access to any drain plugs in the water.

Question: can anyone tell me if the OD fluid is circulated via the engine bay reservoir? If so, I intend to change it the same as power steering fluid. Remove the return line and route it to a collection point, engage the drive, and fill the reservoir with the new fluid until the exiting fluid changes color.

bobby daniels 04-18-2003 12:15 PM

NO SIR ,thats been tried before by a customer of mine and it does not work ,,it left in an air pocket and bang ,it broke ,please get a trailer or something ,,,I've used the redline in tons of drives they do seem to shift better and last longer ,one guy has a cat that turns 7200 and no drive trouble ,,its good stuff:D :D

Havasu Cig 04-18-2003 01:44 PM

Teague also sells Redline.

m1super90 04-18-2003 02:08 PM

Thanks Bobby. I'll just leave it for when I get a hoist. It was changed out mid year in 2002 anyhow.

bobby daniels 04-18-2003 02:51 PM

Yep then it should be find until you get your hoist ,I'm trying to do a large buy from Redline ,will post best price ,they don't really want to deal but we'll keep trying :D :D
