Wet Vs Dry Exhaust
 

Just wondering what kind of power differences do you really see when going from wet to dry exhaust ? For instance, a stainless marine exhaust system that is wet (standard) vs the same system with dry pipes ? (anyone have any data) ?

Some say day it's significant, others, not. The reason I'm asking is becuase I'm considering building new pipes from the manifold to go all the way through the transom, as opposed to connecting the elbows to the transom tips via a hose. I'm really wondering if there will be any benefit of having them dry with the water exiting at the end.

I went from stock to Gil Big Guns Offshore wet pipes. Performance jumped up. Switched wheels from 28p Bravo Ones to 30p Bravo Ones. Switched again to the dry Gils (4 1/2") and got a lot louder but no more speed. Guys give me thumbs up but women hold their ears. Ended up with mufflers ($1500). Shoulded guit with the 4" wet Gils. Great exhaust. Best money spent as far as performance goes. 72/73mph to 80mph.

A dry exhaust will be a little better for another 5-10hp or so, but as "Sea Ya" has experienced, you may not see it in speed in a boat. A dry exhaust will lessen the chance of reversion though as well. And last, but most certainly not least is that they have an awsome, incredible sound! :)

Thanks. That's what I thought. I am right on the edge with reversion though........I guess I wont make this a priority then.

Beware of newly enforced sound levels. Some states are now enforcing sound levels, and actually prohibit changing the exhaust from the way it came from the factory. Can be a costly lesson. I would check local sound ordance laws before changing over. The dry sound can be awesome, bit I'm sure it can become annoying without mufflers at some point, especially with twin engines. You may attract unwanted attention from the authorities.

I converted from dry to wet and also added mufflers. Twin supercharged 572's with dry exhaust was far too loud. Even now it too loud for the noise police. 93 db is the limit and still won't make it. I could not notice any change in power. But then again what is a 10hp 1% loss?
