Oh chit, I think my rods are cracked

Can someone who knows more than me look at these pics and confirm that this crack I have found on 4 stock rods are a bad thing. I suppose I need to change them all now, huh? Money is a real problem. Can I safely use stock gm truck rods for 450 hp?

That doesn't look good.
I've got a set of stock rods laying around. I'll make you a deal on them.....collecting dust for me....someone might as well use them!!! |
Thats junk, replace them all.

Man, Its amazing how that could have happened on a stock motor. I think the last guy who rebuilt this engine did something wrong to have had this happen. Mike. I could use them. . Email me at [email protected].

Good thing you caught that.

yea, I was getting ready to have new pistons hung on them and new bolts so hopefully the machine shop would have seen it. Never seen that before, 4 of the center rods have the identical crack. I just checked crank runout and its less than .001 so that wasnt the problem. All the bearings looked great ??

Could they have overtightened the rod bolts????
|
They were very tight but I didnt check the torque to remove. The way the crack is, I think they were damaged by the bearings trying to spin on a previous blowup. Who knows. The engine was in very good shape and aparently rebuilt very well. I cant believe someone didnt see these cracks.
