Xz Change From 1.50 To 1.36

What is involved in changing the gear ratio on these drives? Are the changes in the upper or lower? What special tools are required?

In the upper.

The change is fairly simple but a few special tools are needed. Buy a Mercruiser service manual for about $35.00 at your Mercruiser dealer. The list of tools needed will be in there with the tools part numbers. The dealer is required by law to sell you the tools and manual that you need to perform your own service work (this info was given to me at Mercruiser service school!).

Shawn,
You might be better off to change the gears in the lower. The cost for the two lower gears are less than half of the upper gear set. I know the XR gears only come in the 1.5:1 and you need to change lower gears.
Check with Sterndrivespec, he can give you the scoop and decent pricing.
