Crossover Vs water pump
I dynoed with a water pump, 509ci, 520hp, 575 ft lbs. Looking for easy power increases, thinking about picking up a crossover. If I do this and ditch the water pump, what kind of power increas would I see.....is 15-20hp about right??
Do most of you run pumps or cross overs? Would I see any temp increases? Also, do you think I should throw a bigger oil cooler on, I run a range of about 200-220* on the oil. Thanks fellas......ALLAN |
Allan,
You'd pick very litte HP. The water pump you'd be eliminating is merely a circulating pump with very little rotational drag, rather than the raw water pump. I doubt you'll find 5 HP. You will probably (assuming you use the same thermostat) maintain the same water temp, or drop just a bit. I run crossovers on my blower motors and eliminated the thermostat. However, I boat in South Florida where water temps rarely fall below 70 and air temp on an annual basis is in the upper 70's. My engine temps hardly ever go above 120. We also run intercoolers so the raw water is disbursed between intercoolers and engine cooling. Generally eliminating the circ pump just cleans up engine appearance and the pesky little rust spots the leaking (which is inevitable in the circ pump) leaves in the bilge. Good luck in your search! |
Some bolts in your bolsters, and some battery trays would probably be good for about 10-15 h.p... As far as the crossover goes.......wait until you have the balls for a BLOWER!!!!!hahahaha

Steve, thanks for the reply....
CFD12......Good memory!!! I'm impressed!! I have plenty 'o balls, just not enough $$ to risk a meltdown with all that cr. Looks like I'll have to wait. I do have some ideas I am working on however, intakes, carbs and exhuast stuff. Anyone else have an opnion?? Thanks, ALLAN |
Allan : I run water pumps with my blowers....No reason to change
5 hp isn't going to matter in a boat Beats having the water pressure problems you hear about. |
True it is more like 5-10 hp you pick up not the 15-20 some people claim. The best reason for them is you don't need it and if it breaks and throws the belt your F*cked depending what belt style you have.

If you run a crossover, you should use a sea strainer with a pressure relef transom dump to relieve excess pressure when jumping waves. If you have side intakes on your drive, you wont need the dumps.

Who is making strainers with integral reliefs?

Okay guys, thanks for the replies. I will just stay with the pump for now and put that $$ other parts.
Ittlfli....how did the 302 dyno?? |
