Msd 6m-2

I picked up an Msd 6m2 box for my 502 mag/mpi with
wire harness anyone hook these up? where did you mount it ? Is this a simple unplug plug in install? Thanks in advance

LapseofReason 03-15-2003 12:00 PM

They are very easy to hook up, it's not a unplug and plug, but pretty easy. When you hook it up make it so if it go's bad you can just unplug and go back to stock you will have to go get another plug mine didn't come with one's to do that with.I had to rewire my buudy's boat on the water to get him home because the guy who set it up hard wired it in and that suck's,make sure you buy weather head plugs. Just mount it in a good spot where it will cool well easy to get to if you have a problem and looks cool

audacity 03-15-2003 12:03 PM

actually the msd makes a wiring harness for that coil...2, 2 pin plugs..you can plug it right in...i did a lot of testing with that engine...by the way, if it's stock...you'll gain nothing with just an msd.

audacity 03-15-2003 12:04 PM

LoR is correct again...they do fail more often than you would like....mount it so the stocker can be switched back over quick

LapseofReason 03-15-2003 12:06 PM

but it help's to keep the back of the boat from turning black, I must have got mine to long ago to get the correct plugs.

CAP071 03-15-2003 12:11 PM

That's why I am hooking the MSD up. I was told on a 100% stock boat it will do nothing but keep the boat from turning black. I was told it will burn more of the fuel, keeping the exhaust a bit cleaner. That all I am really looking for.

audacity 03-15-2003 12:15 PM

your running 87 i hope! and not 89 or higher!

LapseofReason 03-15-2003 12:16 PM

It will do that. Now you can put a better air filter on, up the fuel psi. a little play with the timming some. You wont pick up a lot of hp but some depending how bad it's out of tune now, but it will feel a lot better.

LapseofReason 03-15-2003 12:19 PM

I run 87 in my sonic with 500efi's it still turned black after a long weekend. Not like cho cho train black but bad enough to make me out the msd on.

CAP071 03-15-2003 12:21 PM

I really didn't get into super tuning it yet. I hang out on my boat. when I wanna drive fast i jump on my buddy's boat. I was just looking for a cleaner running engine Ha Ha No more black on back. maybe I'll go for the filter and regulator. The reg is just bolt on and tune with a gauge on it like a car I presume. I run 89 in it I guess maybe I'll run 87 in it this year.

CAP071 03-15-2003 12:24 PM

I'm making my list of tune up parts now for next weekend.

LapseofReason 03-15-2003 12:25 PM

Run the 87 in it and get the timming set, it will run cooler and better, use less gas and live longer.

audacity 03-15-2003 12:29 PM

87 is the right stuff in those engines...there is nothing to be gained with a differnet filter to speak of...i designed and built a custom throttle body will zero gains and then very little making 530+ hp and 600# from that 502mag enigne. put a cam in it if you want to see something.

i have done no real testing on the 500efi's...lots with the 500hps.

take advantage of the msd and gap those plugs out or mod the electrodes...you can gain a few on the dyno with this...rmember it taxes the system and its life span..

audacity 03-15-2003 12:31 PM

87 runs hotter than 89...bumping the timing 2 degs at wot will cool the exhaust tmps about 50deg on that enigne.

CAP071 , i found the same problem after running the new sunsation for the first time saturday.

please let me know how the msd turns out.
was it easy to put in? did it solve the dirty transom problem ect.

thanks ,
steve

I added an MSD-6M last season. It is very simple to add on. Just get the correct plugs from MSD and it will plug right in. As was stated, this is the best way to do this, just in case it fails, you can easily unplug it and run your original ignition. It will clean up your transom, but don't expect any performance gains.

OK Summit wants $145 for a regular msd vs $245 for a marine version? I'm confused I had a msd box on my 4x4 that I use to Baja and it would get beat to death and than hosed off direct water hose n it never failed. Why would I pay 100 more for a blue marine 1 that never gets wet at all ? my under hood 5.0 stang use to crash through water puddles n it never failed. what's the huge $100 difference?

LapseofReason 03-17-2003 05:46 PM

I use the red one's, from what I was told it's just the plug's that are different that's why I had to change mine. The M uses weather head plugs.

CAP071 03-17-2003 05:48 PM

Thats crazy the weather heads should be on all of them I mean think about it a car or truck goes through puddles a Bilge doesn't crash through water like the under hood of my 4x4 when i baja it

LapseofReason 03-17-2003 05:48 PM

USCG might not like it too much but I keep the paper work for the plug I use. But they have never even asked. I think it would take a fire for them to even look.

LapseofReason 03-17-2003 05:54 PM

I know i go four wheeling all the time and my motor is allways under water.

CAP071 03-17-2003 05:57 PM

I can't wait

LapseofReason 03-17-2003 05:58 PM

for what

CAP071 03-17-2003 06:02 PM

I need summer here bad :p :D   :chick:

LapseofReason 03-17-2003 06:09 PM

Dude I'am down here in Stafford Va. and we are starting to hit 70 deg days. I havn't put the Sonic in yet because I'am waiting to hear back from Randy Sweers to see if I'am trading it for the 47 Outerlimits he has. I am afraid I'll bust something on the Sonic before I have to trade it. So I geuss it's the 16' skiff for now.

bobby daniels 03-17-2003 06:18 PM

Just use the 6AL it is now epoxy pacted ,,years ago it was not !

I've used tons and tons of them for years sometimes I use the viberation mounts,,,,,, sometimes not and some jobs when I can do it the way I want I go to NAPA and get weather-pak connectors and install them .

The 6-AL will be fine !!;) :D :D

CAP071 03-17-2003 06:51 PM

LAPSE If you get an Outerlimits i want a ride! :D

LapseofReason 03-17-2003 07:02 PM

I got a pretty sweet deal working on the 47 at fastboats.com If I get it I'll be doing all the local poker runs and maybe the NYC. Randy has only driven the boat once and said it was a 95-100 mph , but when I called Outerlimits to get some info on it Mike said it was doing 104 in 3 footers. Needless to say I can't wait either.

CAP071 03-17-2003 07:08 PM

Thats 1 hell of a boat dude Damn goodluck
