harmonic balancer

how do you remove them??? I've never done it before. I take it you need some kind of special tool that keeps the crank from spinning while turning the nut?

Call me "ignant" but i never removed one before. I figure di might as well pull my old funky 330 apart. I think i might even rebiuld it. :D I found a dually that has a shot engine for super super cheap.

WITH A GEAR PULLER,, BOLT INTO THE OUTER HOLES,,,, MAKE SURE YOU PULL ANY BOLT OUT THATS IN THE CENTER FIRST.

OPPS,,sorry about the caps

an impact gun should pop the center bolt out without to much trouble

Or, put a couple of bolts in 2 of the 3 threaded holes where the pulley bolted on and use a big screwdriver between the bolts to keep it from turning while you take the center bolt out.

Make sure you use a puller that uses the bolt's in the center of the balancer, I have seen people use a 3 finger puller and ruin a two peice balancer I don't know if you have a two peice or not but better safe than sorry.

They make special pullers for this purpose. Napa carries them and they are quite cheap. Three bolts thread in to the holes that held the pully on. The puller will then push against the crank snout. As long as the dampner isn't rusted, it'll pop right off.

Installing it is another matter. Sometimes you can use the stock bolt. Sometimes you need a specialized installer that will pull it on. Apply a thin layer of ainti-sieze to the crank snout. Not too much or the stuff will be everywhere. DON'T beat the dampner on. DON'T take a hone and open up the hole.

the one that is on there now is really rusted and funky. I am sure it will need to be replaced.

As it turns out a budy of ine has a puller so i'm gonna borrow it to remove the old balancer. I am months away from rebiulding the engien so installation will requirea anotehr thread ina few months ;)
