Paging Dennis Moore.......

Dennis, would you set me/us straight.
We've been haggling over what to use on small block screwed in rocker studs.
Should one of the Loctite products be used, some type of sealer, or just oil on the threaded end that screws into the head?

I thought Loctite was the proper thing to use. One member says he was told or suggested that avation gasket sealer should be used.

Another question. Do any of the stud mounting holes break through to the cooling passages?
I thought they didn't, one person said he found water coming out after removing a screwed in stud.

Thanks.

Only on the old style GM cylinder heads

On the old style (Chevy made) cylinder heads, about 1977 and older, there is a water jacket underneath the rocker studs. The water jacket has been eliminated on newer heads (and all aftermarket heads). Some of the stud holes do go through into the top of the intake port. It is easy to see or feel from inside the intake port. I usually use teflon pipe sealer on the studs and torque them to 35 foot pounds but locktite would work fine also.
Thanks for Asking!
Sincerely
Dennis Moore

Dennis....Well Im using L31 Vortec heads. They came stock with pressed in studs. I had them drilled and taped for screw in studs. 7/16 Base and 3/8 post (like you recommended in your book). When I removed the studs It was clear that water was coming out of the stud holes.......These heads are BRAND NEW bought from GM in 2002......Am I seeing things or what!
