Rotating engine by prop??

I need to roll my engine around to re-check valve adjustment. I could use the starter but that is always hit or miss as to the exact position. If I remove all my plugs can I roll it over from the drive and would that hurt anything if I really had to reef on it? The crank bolt is not accessible.

Tim, starter is much easier. Do the intake when the exhaust starts to open, do the exhaust when the intake is almost finished closing (on a cylinder by cylinder basis). It will take a bit of effort to turn the engine from the propshaft but I suppose you could do it.

If you try to turn it by the drive, then you essentially make it a multi person job....................just not something I like to chance when lashing valves. More room for mistakes, and blame.

Just a thought

Tim,
If you take the plugs out you should be able to turn it by hand from the crank pulley. Or if possible put a socket/ratchet on the balancer bolt.
I guess the socket thing isn't possible, I'm sure you would have thought of that. You should be able to turn it by hand though, no problem.

Get a remote starter. Then take the hose off of your compression tester & screw it in #1cyl..Start to tap the engine over while holding your thumb over the compression tester hose feeling for compression .Look at your balancer and crank it over until you feel compression and the crank timimg is at zero..You are now on number 1 compresion stroke. I don't know them by heart, but you can now adjust 4 cyls,,,and then tap it around 1 revolution, timing back to zero, and do the other 4.....By doing it this way,you can do it by yourself...I hope I explained it to you clearly.

Tim, I have used 1 of the 3 pulley bolts many times to manually turn the motor over with no problem.
