K-planes not working
My K-planes don't want to move up or down. The motor turns and the fluid is up to the fill plug. Can anyone explain the mechanics of them to me? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

More info please; New, Just installed? - Worked O.K. last fall but won't work now? - Replaced a hose or hoses? Give us more to go on and I'm sure you'll get the help you need. --- Jer

Just bought the boat Saturday. I emailed the previous owner and am awaiting his reply. I took the fill plug out and tried to trim it up and down. It did not move. Also, it didn't look like there was any movement in the fluid. BTW the fluid is a kind of pink color, sort of like pepto.

If it is pink then you have water in it. It should be red (ATF) or Motor Oil. I did one a while back that was doing this and found that it was a rebuilt one and the guy never put a insert that goes btwn the motor and the pump. There is not a whole lot to fix or break in them so that is were I would look first. Did you try and hit and hold the button for a little bit? while you have a friend hold the trim button give the thing a couple wacks with a hammer (not hard). There is a little ball valve in there that could I sappose get stuck. Hope that helps ya some.

Both sides don't work? You should have seperate pumps for each k-plane. I doubt both pumps would be bad at the same time. Do the pumps run when you hit the switch? If not, you must have an electrical problem. check for voltage and grounds to the pumps first.

Both pumps run when I press their switch. Voltage looked like it was +6V or -6V depentding on whether I was trimming up or down. I think I will change the fluid and give it a whack with a rubber mallet while trying to trim it.

Just got an email from the previous owner... He had the motors replaced, so I am assuming the place that did it did not reassemble them correctly. If I disassemble them what should I look for?

Try removing one fitting from the ram. See if it's pumping oil to the ram.

I don't know if this will help, but they are 1992 models. Most of the newer ones I've seen, the pump is in the engine compartment and the ram is out on the transom. On mine, it is all one piece (the motor, pump and ram). The only thing that comes out of the back of the transom is the rod attached to the plane.

Here is a link to a diagram of my K-planes...

fixed it...
In case anyone wanted to know...
There is a little coupler (not shown in the diagram) between the motor and the top of the pump. I took the motor off, cleaned everything up, lined it up and put it back on. I think the shop that replaced the motors for the previous owner didn't make sure the coupler was where it is supposed to be. duunoit |
giving credit where credit is due...
right after I posted my last, I re-read Audiofn's post and he hit the nail right on the head...
Thanks Jon... duunoit |
I had the same thing happen with mine last season. The shop pulled the motor to get the numbers off and didnt replace it. When the new motor came in the slotted coupler (which is not shown in the break down) was bouncing around the bottom of the pump assembly.
Sorry I didnt see this post sooner but glad to see you got it working. |
