What sealant to use? K-Plane to transom?

I am re-installing a K-plane on my boat. Can I use regular silicone between the mounting plate and the transom or do I need to use some kind of (marine grade) sealer?

I would use 3m 4200. Please do NOT let someone talk you into 5200.

Scott,

What's the deal w/4200 vs 5200?

THRILLSEEKER 04-18-2003 07:21 AM

yeah? Whats the difference Scott?

Scott 04-18-2003 07:29 AM

What you guys can't add I would have to say 1000.

Sorry had to:D

5200 should be considered a permanent repair. Something you would never want to take apart like a deck to a hull. Too many sales people don't know the difference in goo and think 5200 is the one for all repairs. 4200 is strong and it can be removed without pulling the gel off the surface. 5200 is great stuff but only if you never need to disassemble. Ask Raypanic he may have a story for you!;)

Scott is exactly right. 4200 is what you want

I've got to agree, use 4200. I needed to repair the cabin door frame (cracked), some damn fool used 5200 and we had to repair the gel coat as well!

There is a "remover" available now for 5200...and it works. I tried it last year. It does'nt dissolve the stuff...but somehow it starts weakening the adhesion at the edges, then ya just keep peeling a little more of it back and spraying more of this stuff in...and keep on going. I got it off my gell with no damage....found it at Mikes Marine in St Clair Shores, but I'm sure its available at many other places.
