changing valve springs

on 1998 hp500 carb motor when changing valve springs do you need to use shims of any kind or just remove the stock springs and put the new ones on. and what is a good adjustment for the valves.

If the spring you are using gives you a proper spec at exiisting installed height, then, at minimum you need to re-use existing shims. I only say this because it's an HP500 and proper care has probably been taken to compensate for installed height[ie: spring pockets are not all machined to the same depth] If you want to do it right, buy a valve spring height micrometer...only costs a little more than $50 bucks, and have the peace of mind knowing it's done right.

Boy theres alot to consider when doing springs I would not do it with out the right tools and someone who knows pressures and heights ,ect.
heights can vary from one to another 20 to50 k with no problem
becareful !!!!!!!!!!!

Don't mess around on this one. Make sure the springs are set to whatever height is required to get the proper seat pressure.

I just did a pair on a 96',
with approx. 360 hrs. on both,
found no broken springs.
My 98's were broken in half the
hours of this.
While your in there, change the
valve seals.
I checked the installed height.
most were right on 1.9", none
were looser that + .010",
couldn't find any shims that small
to correct the difference.
They're back together now,
working ok.
