seawater impellors again!

I know that this topic has been beat to death but who can reccomend the best quality seawater impellors and where to buy them?

I know there was a lot of talk about Globe but also something about, they wouldnt work on a merc pump:confused:

Iggy 04-23-2003 09:29 AM

The'll fit but some people seem to experience a slightly higher operating temp. I have no idea why.
I will be installing one in my Alpha drive real soon.
Best price I've found is at BoatFix.com .
Price and part number is GRW2000, $23.94 (reg price 35.90) or GRW1000, $20.87 (reg price 31.30).
I don't know which one fits yours. Maybe someone here can answer that.

THRILLSEEKER 04-23-2003 09:41 AM

I am talking about the one that mounts off of the bottom of the engine, my water pickups are mounted on the hull not in the outdrive.
But thanks for the info.

Iggy 04-23-2003 09:52 AM

I know that.
Globe makes only two impellers for Merc applications. The catalog on BoatFix.com doesn't say which is which. But I do know the GRW1000 will fit my Alpha. Even Globe Rubber Works web site doesnt differentiate the application.
That's why I hope someone here can point us in the right direction.

Follow the like to this thread, maybe it'll shed a little light on the subject.

Blue impeller information

Sorry Iggy! I thought that you were talking about something else:o

Reckless32 04-23-2003 10:57 AM

Okay, while it at it, I read the attached post on these impellers. DO they last longer or is it a bunch of hype?...

Iggy 04-23-2003 11:17 AM

This is a quote from Globe Rubber Works site.

GLOBE RESILIENT BLUE IMPELLERS

RUN DRY FOR 15 MINUTES, DEMAND THE BLUE ONE!

TRIPLE service life at competitive prices, means less down time and less cost. That's what it's all about.

The only impeller in the world guaranteed to RUN DRY FOR 15 MINUTES!

GLOBE impellers are made of elastomer compounds, developed for optimum performance and self lubricating for run dry protection.

All GLOBE impellers are made from elastomers giving them the combined characteristics and multiple properties of rubber, nitrile, viton and neoprene. For diesel fuel transfer, request the Red Globe Impeller.

Additionally, GLOBE impellers have greater resistance to sand and dirt abrasion.

GLOBE manufactures most popular replacement impellers: JABSCO, JOHNSON PUMPS, CATERPILLAR, CRUSADER, CUMMINS DIESEL, DETROIT DIESEL, KOHLER, MERCRUISER, MERLIN, NORTHERN LIGHTS, OBERDORFER, UNIVERSAL, VOLVO, WESTERBEKE, YANMAR and others.

GLOBE impellers are specified by the U.S. Coast Guard and the navies of the world.

Iggy, if thing works like they say, it would be the hot ticket on our boats. These things are a pain in the a$$ to change. I just pulled my buddies apart on a 496HO. What a pain.

Iggy 04-24-2003 06:08 AM

Since I have an Alpha drive my impeller is inside it. I have to tear the damn thing apart to get to it. I figure if I put the good one in maybe I won't have to do it so often. It's either that or mount a pump on the engine and run an external pickup.

formula31 04-24-2003 07:22 AM

Well, I ran one, side by side against a stock impeller, new pump bodies. I didnt see any advantage other than it was easier to install. I changed the Globe out after the second year due to wear. It had worn more than the stock impeller. Since I dont ever run my engines without water to them, it may not have been a fair test. I do run in some shallow water with a lot of sand and it didnt do very well with that against the stock one. They probably will never get stiff and break like the stock ones do after years but I pull my pumps down every winter to check them anyway so there was no advantage for me. I wont buy them again for this, stay in the water, application.

Thanks formula31 for your input. I guess i'll just stick with the status quo...
