HP500 starting trouble

Went to fire up a buddy's
99' carbed 500's after de winterizing,
turned them over, engine would kick back against
the starter, assuming there was too much fogging
solution in the cylinders, and it was "hydraulicing"
we pulled the plugs, rolled the engine over,
no liquid came out of the spark plug holes,
reinstalled the spark plugs, disconnected the coil wire,
cranked over the engine, no problem,
reconnect the coil wire, crank it over............. "DING'
broken starter bolt, up in the block.
Distributor cap appears ok, no visible cracks,
the ignition module is an absolute M.F. to access
while in the boat.
We just got done pulling the engine, to dig out
the remains of the broken bolt.
I am assuming this is an ignition related problem,
being the engine rotated no problem when spark was
disconnected.
I thought of marking the balancer and cranking it over
and try to watch for mistimed spark, being the modules
are a bastard to get to....

But I would thought I would excercise the knowledge
wealth here first.....

anybody else experience this??????

sounds like you got yourself in one hell of a spot, sucks is a better word, you will have more load on the starter with ignition on versus ign off, a loose starter bolt are bolts might cause the starter to" cock" under load causing the kickback problem and broken bolt, also check for timing problem liked you talked about, good luck
