Metal In Oil
I checked my oil before changing it after I de-winterized last week and found some very fine brass looking filings on the dipstick. This will only be the 3rd oil change since the motor was built, I did not build the motor. I've never had a motor do this. wondering if anyone has seen this on a motor breaking in? I can understand bearings doing this on the first oil change but any burs should be off by now.:(

Brass...hmmm... does not make sense. Come to think of it, the only thing I can think of that is "brass" is the drain plug on my block for water.
What else is brass with a motor where it could come from. Never even heard of bearings doing that before? |
I hate to be the berer of bad news but the Brass is the inner material in your bearings your bearings are toast.......I cant think of any other way you can get brass in the oil! I wouldn't run it or you may trash the crank or throw a rod...

Sorry to hear that Martin. I know you have been working your ass off getting this boat ready for this season.

Could it be bronze from the distributor drive gear if your running a roller cam?
I'd think you'd be hearing something, like a knock, if the bearings where that bad.  |
Thanks man but you know if it breaks Its gonna be when I'm out in the middle of lake erie alone on a stormy day.

They say the bronze gears wear fast.
GM recomends a "melinized" gear for the new 502. Part #gm 10456413 |
I had two of my main's down to the Brass ran great! never knocked a bit ....hows your oil pressure?
|
Do you have those high quaility GOLD CRANE ROCKERS ?
It could be bearing ,was the metal in the filter ?   |

Just a bad bearing, ruined crank and cracked block!!! Engine ran great and strong. I just noticed a little oil in the bilge.
Pull the motor before an inexpensive issue turns into a complete rebuild with new block like mine!!! |
I would take the filter off and cut in open for a close inspection.
|
As already stated I would check the distributor gear before I tore the whole engine down;) If its not a brass gear then just call me when it breaks because I will be the only other crazy ****er out on the lake on a stormy day:crazy:

Dont forget about me, Ill probably be there too. Probably broke down too though. I hope it isnt too serious. Dist gear, valve guide, bearings, cam gear thrust washer, thats about all I can think of thats brass looking.

Dyno, oil pressures good.
Bobby: No, I run H.S. rockers. The filter was clean. Thrillseeker, and Formula 31 Keep your eye out for me my boat will look like this.:D |
YOU MAY HAVE SPUN A BEARING.BETTER TO TEAR DOWN & CHECK IT WILL BE CHEAPER TO CHECK IT NOW. RON BENDER

Distributor drive gear first and valve spring shims next.
If they did not put a hardened valve spring shim under the spring it can do the same thing. |
Just once
Pull that motor & drop the pan and be sure. I just bought a HP 500 motor that had been rebuilt, oil pressure was great for a short period & started dropping slowly. Within 1 hour max I spun a bearing on # 6 rod. I still had 20' of pressure at 1000rpm before I pulled the pan. I am gonna pull the rest of the caps tomorrow. Check it for peace of mind & save yourself $$$ Iam not looking forward to starting all over again plus I just blew a couple $$$ and never had any fun doing it! |
Sounds pretty weird......nothing in the filter? if the brass was on the dip stick it should be in the filter....Good Luck Man!
