Can the power steering pump be mounted on the other side?
I am having some issues with trying to get a hatch lift into my boat. The Power steering pump is in the way. Also with the pump on the side it is currently on, the hoses for the hydrolic helm have to be a bunch longer and it will look like hell. So I was wondering about mounting the steering pump on the other side of the engine above the raw water pump. Does anyone know of a set up to do this? Otherwise I can put the pump on my port engine but that means even longer hoses, and at 4+ bucks a foot I want them as short as possible. Thanks for the help.

Mine is mounted above the see pump. I think thats the way all the early ( 85 ) 454's are but I could be wrong. Good luck, Doug

Anything is doable. It sure would be alot of work as the brackets proably would need to be custom fabbed. Every BBC that I've ever seen has the pump in the stock location. This is because the steering gear was always on that side. Now, maybe if you could find some brackets from an engine where the wheel was on the opposite side...

Make it go roundy round in the same direction, & it should be fine :)

You have to move it to the starboard side when adding a Procharger, so I don't see why you can't.

Anyone know of a kit?

I was thinking of putting one on both of my engines. At low rpm, it doesn't want to power much. Also, it seems whenever I stall an engine, it is always the one with the ps pump. Has anyone installed them on both engines?

Can't put on both, pick one side or the other.... they will conflict with each other

You can buy a "valve" Cuda........Imco has them.......So you can
run 2 pumps......I'm thinking of doing it also |
Thanks Birdog, as Cord says, "anything is doable" :D

Now that you have the windscreen, dash, seats and steering apart, I can see how you would want to rip the PS pump off the boat too :D ...Why dont you hack the nose off her while you`re at it and graft a Fountain beak on it also!!! :D :D :D
PUT THE THING BACK TOGETHER DUDE... BOATING SEASON IS HERE!!!!!!!! :D:eek: :D |
just got in from the knife and gun club I can see :D:D
Seriously man this one has me stumped. Jon |
Cuda it is called a priority valve

Thanks Sutphen :D:D

I'm interested in that part # also. My Formula has the pump on the starboard side (due to Prochargers) but my Sonic is on the port side & would like to switch as I have added Latham steering & the reservoir is the same as the Formula's......

My boat has a ps pump on both motors. Are there any draw back to this? The benefit is obvious.

Sutphen30: Even if you can just get me a serial number off your motors or tell me what they are maybe I can chase it down that way if you can not find the part number on the bracket.

Hey cuda..instead of adding a second pump and all that parasitic HP loss, try reducing the diameter of your pulley. This should get your pump spinning faster at low RPM and get more flow moving. This usually works just fine. As for the priority valve, you can do this with a tee and two check valves on the pressure lines just the same. The trick is to return in series not in parallel.

Hey Cuda, redundancy is everything when it comes to steering. Last year I was at speed in Lake Cumberland and broke an alternator belt, which threw off the PS belt in the process. I took a HARD left and damn near ate the shore.
I just rigged a Latham system for my boat this winter, on a boat that originally only had one pump. Randy from Cobra Power (305 893-5018) has a warehouse full of parts, both new and used, and he was able to set me up with a pump, brackets, cooler, etc. Call Ted Chance from Latham (800 422-7267) and he can set you up with a"Y" valve to accomodate twin PS pumps, as well as all of the brass fittings to make it happen. Good luck... Summers' comin'! Brian |
Thanks Brian, I'll check with them.

Thanks for all the help :D:D
