Drives

I have an older 24 ft. Excalibur with a Merc 1 trans.Increasing horsepower and know trans. will not hold and no room to install better one.Any suggestions on what to convert too, drive wise?

Check with BAM. I think I remember reading that they could upgrade that tranny.
Otherwise a bravo? Or maybe an Arneson with the extension for the drop box and tranny?
Gary

Solution

Huber builds a two year warranty transmission and with a standoff box you can install a Pulse-Drive with a five year warranty. Check out www.pulsedrive.com

single engine+surface drive=dock damage
please check my math I could be wrong never drove a boat with pulse drives, I know every surface drive boat that I've been in was tough in tight areas though.

Look at the Imco 4x4 with a Borg Warner tranny. I think that one was supposed to be a good replacement for a TRS.

You are right, except that the Pulse Drive has twin rudders that flank the prop and it has a housing over the prop that is make to direct the water under the boat instead of against the transom. There are quite a few singles out there in the Pulse Drive and if you go to the video on their web site it has a single with a wood deck on it in the manuvering mode. Thanks and hope you look at the video. Also, the pulse drive will fit in the place of the TRS's without moving the engines.

Just once, My chioce would be the pulse drive. I was a passenger in the boat at the dock, then drove it out in open water. The slow speed handling was better than my old single with a TRS. Once on plane there was no comparison. The Pulse drive was great.

I'tl be something to consider, I don't have the cheese right now though.

I have a Formula with Kaama drives. I've only docked it three times so far, but two were perfect and one left a bit to be desired. I have twin engines, but I come in with one in neutral. Even though the other engine isn't running, the other drive may still act to help with rudder control.

Have a look at the video on www.pulsedrive.net it has a 21' single engine backing in circles, decide for yourself

KAAMA 05-10-2003 03:25 PM

Does Marc at BAM have specially treated gears for a Merc #2 drive???

Mbam 05-11-2003 07:40 AM

Kaama, sorry no gears for a #2, also the TRS gears are on hold for now. Had a bad experience with a heat treater and decided to work on some new gears altogether. Taking longer than I planned (just like everything else)

I have a 604 with 725h.p. now and want to put a blower on it later.

rws 05-13-2003 07:53 AM

If you want stay with a TRS Drive you will have to upgrade to a Borg Warner Velvet Drive 72C transmission that has been modified. They are 5" longer than the Merc trans you may have to modify the back seat to make it fit!

P.S. I know where a whole setup is for sale to do the conversion.

You do know that Pulse-Drive gives you the 5 Year warranty with this horsepower and Huber upgrade goes to 900 hp with a one year warranty
