Machining tapered shaft

I just bought a new steering wheel for my boat. It has a 3/4" tapered shaft with a keyway. Tried to put it on my cruiser, didn't fit. It looks to have a 7/8" tapered shaft with keyway.
Is there a tool used to machine out tapered shaft cutouts, like on IB props, etc. Or do I just get out a grinder and enlarge it freehand?

You can take the shaft or the steering wheel mount to almost any machine shop and they can fix it easily. No one I ever saw can do a good fit on this by hand!!!! PM for more ideas.

Depends on the taper, but you may be able to find the correct taper reamer which would allow you to do the wheel by hand (provided the key is still deep enough). Look at www.mcmaster.com
