Timing ?? for EFI Whipple users

What is the maximum advance that you run on your EFI Whipple setup ??? I just installed one on my buddies 454 EFI and I set total advance at 30 degrees, but I think I can go to 34 degrees safely.

Thanks,
Dave

34 will work as long as you have good fuel an check knock sensors,,I use 34 alot

Dave,

I have 500 EFI with Whipples in a triple engine set up. When we put in new engines last summer (Chief engines, Fort Lauderdale) , we dynoed each engine at timing settings from 30 to 36 degrees, and found very little HP or Torque difference. (+/- 10 HP/ 15 lbs) We ended up at 32 degrees as a conservative midpoint. At 36 the knock sensors would kick in at full load, at 32 everything works fine thru the entire power band. We're running the Whipple intercoolers and 92/93 octane fuel. Engine temps never exceed 120 degrees and WOT water pressure is 18 lbs.

Hope this helps,

Steve

Bobby and Steve,

Thanks for the input. I think I will set it at 32 degrees and play it safe. If it was my own boat I would stretch it, but I don't want to play with someone elses motor.

Thanks,
Dave
